I have a Samsung Monitor that was recently launched in 2020 - S24R356.
It is an AH-IPS budget panel, and I bought the monitor itself for 140$ around in India.
Before this I had a LG 27UK650 4k AH-IPS monitor, which after 3 months of trying all possible things to remove the issues of [ill feeling, nausea, headache-y, disorientation scattered feeling, fuzziness of brain] I gave up and sold it away.
I tried all sorts of things - different kinds of ambient lighting, bias-lighting, verified there is no flickering with a 240fps phone camera, changing the (gamma, colors, power outlet), used it with different laptops desktops GPUs (with and without dithering), tried IRIS and fLUX with different low blue light modes, tried the eye saver blue light filter modes on the monitor itself.
None of these really worked.
I bought some cheap blue light glasses and they gave me an even worse headache, so sold those too.
Finally I took the huge step of purchasing an EZ pro 24" anti blue light shield that is a plexiglass plate with a wedge at the top to place it over the monitor.
This definitely reduces the intensity of light coming, sort of like a partial antiglare, and it also dulls the image to an extent from its brilliance, and all this helps a bit.
I do not get the same intensity of symptoms, and they take a bit longer to onset, and do not last as long as before too.
However that woozy fuzzy feeling starts as soon as 10m into using the monitor, and there is not much change in that.
It seems like the fundamental issue is still present, and it is only mitigated by this anti blue light shield.
The shield is also super reflective like a mirror, so I have to turn off all the ambient lights and only have the light at the back of the monitor or at the corner of the room to not have any serious glare.
Before buying this, I was strongly feeling, this would be the ultimate solution to this problem.
But what I see is that it causes a 50% reduction in the intensity of symptoms and prolongs their intense side effects from coming, hmm but it is not the CORE issue which is still there.
There is something about the nature of the freq modulation of light coming through the screen that makes me feel irradiated and get fuzzy and headache-y.
The annoying thing is sometimes I'd think I got through 3 hrs of use with very little strain, but after I stop using, in the later part of the day, the side effects will appear of a continuous mild headache and slight brain fuzz which really reduces the quality of life. It goes away the next day though so far each time, esp. if I use it with the blue light shield.
Another thing about the blue light shield is that, it converts the matte monitor into a super glossy one. That makes reading text etc. more relaxing.
So this is my story. Thought it might be useful to share.
I am wondering whether to buy a VA or TN monitor to replace the one I have.
I read in the other posts that the LG Ultragear 32GK650 VA one is good.
Another one was 24GL600F TN.
This really feels like shooting in the dark though.
I simply have no idea what to expect until it arrives and I try it out for 3-4 days.
And in India you cannot even return a product unless there is a real physical defect.
So I'd have to sell it separately.
That is why I am trying to get the most info before getting a new one.
The screens I can use easily now are my laptops.
13.3" Dell XPS 13 9350 2015 end model (screen is made by Sharp), brightness goes very low. I can easily use this for 8+ hrs a day.
The other one is Asus G752VT 2015 end model, this one has a whiter bigger screen of 17.3" but I can use it for 4-5 hrs without much issue.
I use both of them with Flux though, and interestingly I measured with a lux meter, Flux Halves the Lux output.
For instance in my Dell xps 13 the lowest brightness is 17.3lux but it goes to 8-9lux if I enable flux.
The Dell XPS 13.3" 9350 screen is the best in my experience though.
I feel the 13.3" tiny size might play a role? I'm not sure.
I don't know if size only exarcerbates the strain or actually causes it.
It does play a role for sure imo though.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks.
