Hi all,
I'm working on a new experiment that I'd like to share with you. I think flickering light is at the core of my screen problems. Dithering, PWM, LCD inversion, etc, can all be described as flickering of some sort.
I often find myself wondering if higher refresh rate monitors or phones are the answer to my problems. But such devices are very expensive, and may not help. So to explore flickering in general, and to determine what frequencies are problematic, and which are ok, I am creating an experiment.
I will use a raspberry pi to drive a few LEDs at a variety of PWM frequencies and duty cycles. I will use this light for reading and see if a migraine or headache is triggered with the settings used, and repeat.
I am expecting to find that slow flickering triggers headaches, and that at higher frequencies I will get migraines. With luck, I will find a range of frequencies which trigger no symptoms. This is going to take months for me to get any useful results as I'll need a few days to recover between each attempt.
The first big challenge will be to get the Pi set up comfortably, so I don't give myself a heading just setting it up. Any tips on how to turn off dithering on linux? fortunately I still have my capture card so I can quantify what's going on.
