So long story - in the process of playing with updates my known-good Dell XPS 13" (2015 model, with Intel 5500 graphics) got updated to 19xx and had to be reformatted.

So I dropped 1511 on there. Latest iteration (the one from April 2016).

Basic display driver seems ok, but I have yet to find an Intel driver that is comfy. I know I had a SPECIFIC one that was VERY old, and I thought it was the one from Intel's site (beta combined 7/8/10 driver v15.40.26.4474) but that doesn't seem to be it, at least not on white colored windows. So now I'm pulling my hair out trying to find any mention of which driver version I used previously.

I haven't ruled out the idea that the 1511.3 is not as good ass 1511.1 or 1507, and I could certainly install LTSB 2015 instead, but was hoping to make 1511 work since it still has some security updates, and is a little more friendly to drivers for various things than 1507 was.

I also haven't ruled out that maybe I had a Dell-specific driver of some kind on there. I had literally been fiddling with that laptop's config since 2015.

Thoughts on drivers? Should I be mining the depths of google looking for a better driver? Or downgrading to 1507? Or looking for a panel driver?

Bear in mind, that the login screen and the windows basic display driver were pretty ok for the couple minutes they were in use. But maybe not as perfect as I remember the machine being.

Gurm changed the title to Windows 10 1511 w/Intel 5500 Driver .

I'm pulling the 4624 driver that some people have referenced in here, hoping that's the one. I wish I could find one of my earlier posts where I'm sure I listed which version I was using, it took me a long time to find even back in 2017/2018 so I'm sure it wasn't commonly available on Intel's site...

Gurm Possible it was 4279 which is what I use on Windows 7 on my 6000 otherwise you need to search your post history. On Windows 10, there are 2 that are pre-loaded in the Windows Update Catalog (any other build you need to get from an OEM or Intel). 4531 and 4624. I am using 4624 two different ways on 20H2. By preference, IT Content off for both ways (what this setting is, it's a hdmi flag for what the content being displayed is, video, text, etc. With it on, the GPU attempts to process it more, with it off it just sends it to the panel to deal with). One is with YCbCr enabled in the color settings instead of RGB (which makes the screen look a little glassy, 4531 doesn't present the same way which is why I am not using that one), and the other is with RGB enabled but with ditherig running which doesn't have the glassy effect but is a little better with colors. I have been able to test and prove to myself that ditherig does have an effect on my external monitor. Not necessary to use ditherig in YCbCr mode as it isn't dithering in that mode with 4624 but doesn't hurt anything to have it running either.

As a sidebar, build 2004, 20H2 and 21H1 are all going to be the same base according to MS. Their server base version which they're rolling out now won't be used for consumers until 21H2 which is when we'll have to test everything all over again.

MS keeps trying to force updates on older builds, so it would be better for you to see if you can get 20H2 working. I have been able to use it and switch between it and 7.

PS. The dp-to-port dongle you use does make a difference. I have a few of them, and they all have subtle differences. The HDMI port on a NUC or laptop that supports dp as an output port isn't a native hdmi port, it's an internal dp-to-hdmi dongle and I think some of the third parties use a better chip than intel for this conversion purpose. The GPU is natively DP.
