Dear community,
I owe you a lot, that's why I decided to share my story.
Since 2012 it has been a really hard find screen, which did not make me eye strain and headache. However I was ok with my laptop and I did not pay much attention to it.
The real issue came in summer 2019, my laptop was broken and I had to buy new one. I bought legion from Lenovo, nvidia and intel graphic drivers. And the hell became. I tested more than 10 external screens, many filters for blue light as well as new glasses after doctor appointment. Nothing changed. Till December 2019 I was not able to work, had problems keeping balance, and also had weird pressure in my ears. Every morning I woke up with headache. I visited a neurology doctor and another eye clinic, but nobody found anything unusual. I was able to spend maybe 10-25 minutes in front of the screen 2-3 times per day. It was a pretty stressful time due to being self-employed. That's why I tried again and again. I remember how desperate I was during Christmas 2019 and I decided to find some kind job with no computer need. That time, all screens made me eyestrain, dry eye symptom and a very strong headache (usually in a few minutes).
Luckily i have found this website and your stories. It made me little bit calm I believed (and still believe) that one day it's gonna be ok. Again, I was very lucky a contacted Martin from Czech Republic (probably many of you know his web site https://heteroforie.webnode.cz/). He already knew about this issue a lot (more than all doctors I have visited together). He recommended visiting his optometrist and I did. After a few minutes of appointment there, the heterophoria was diagnosed. I got new prismatic glasses and 2 month later I started to do visual training.
I tried to work with a projector (lamp source with no LED). It was very helpful I was able to work for may be 2 hours per day. (Cut in 15 minutes intervals). Later and according to discussions here I have realised there is no problem with screens, but with grafic drivers, maybe windows and other
I tried a few new laptops but I did not find any, which did not caused me pain.
During spring (all the situation about covid happened) my issue got a bit better. I worked with the projector, the graphic driver was disable. I was able to work for 4-5 hours, especially during afternoon and evening. Unfortunately something changed. Incredible headache came back. That time I was again at the beginning. I did not find what was it. Maybe all my eyes muscles were too tired. I decided to start work at a coffee shop. I love coffee 🙂). More then month long break helped and I started to work little bit again. I decided to buy dasung e-ink monitor. It took so long to get it. However the first days with it were different than with other monitors. Good different. Due to low refresh rate blicking and 'snowing' is visible at mode 3 (the most realistic picture). I usually work with mode 2, there is no anything form mentioned issues and it's totally enough for basic administration (mail, ms office)
Also I got option to try other laptop - Asus with ADM graphic adapter. It changed the situation very much. I use it for more than 3 months, I can work for 5-7 hours per day, usually not in the morning. I probably need some time to stretch eye muscles. Also I don't pay attention to win version or graphic driver. It just worked for me from the beginning. However, there are good days and bad days. But there are more good days. It's important to rest a lot, sleep properly, glass of fine also helps. Currently I take a break every 20-25 minutes for 5 minutes at least. It's very important to not over stretch eye muscles. Because to recover it takes me days. I still feel some discomfort, but compared to my situation one year ago...it's great.
Also I figured I'm pretty sensitive to bluelight, changed bulbs helped and also to use dasung helped a lot.
I'm not able to say if my issue is just about heterophoria, or just about bluelight sensitivity or temporal dithering. Probably piece of all.
There is a clear message from me: visual training helps, but it is necessary to be very passionate. The First results I felt after 7 months. But now I feel much better, also my vision is better. All is so sharpfull, colorfull, also 3D effect I can recognise.
Actually my problem with being tired was reduced as well.
I do vision training still every day, more than 20 minutes. Without it I can not start my work day. Also I would like to say, don't focus just on technology, without a proper diagnosis from an eye doctor or optometrist it would be possible to solve it.
I'm not feel like a completely healthy person, but I know I'm on the way to living without neverending pain. Maybe with some special laptop, screen, filters, glasses, whatever. But to know I'm on my way, helped a lot. Phycology effect probably.
Thanks for all of you, who shared life story as well as ideas and experiences with all HW and SW.
If you are interested about any part of my story, feel free to ask. Also sorry of my English, I'm better listener than writer.
Regards
Tom
