I have noticed sometimes, that when I am in restaurants or offices, I can stare at the TVs they have with very few symptoms. I would go as far as to say fairly easy on the eyes. I was at the doctors office and found myself watching HGTV for longer than I had expected. I asked the receptionist what brand of TV it was and she was actually able to get me a printout of the model.

Turns out it was a “Comercial” TV that is also used for digital signage. It’s the Samsung 55 inch BE55T-H.

I have theories about this TV.

  1. Since it’s meant for business, it likely doesn’t use a lot of in depth color tricks (i.e.temporal dithering may be minimized).
  2. The light output isn’t huge coming in at 250 nits. (Less searing of the eyes)
  3. No HDR. Hopefully less processing.
  4. It may still use PWM for dimming though, so please keep this in mind. I’m not sure.

This TV comes in 4 sizes which is cool for options. I plan on buying one and stashing it for when one of mine dies. I know there is no one fix for everyone, but I wanted to share my findings.

From what I can tell most of the business displays are fairly old. Like in my gym the Tv's are all the really old ones with thicker border bezels. Thats usually what I look for in older monitors and Tv's in the second hand market. The thicker the bezel the better it could be in my mind.

All my TV's I own I turn off all the motion smoothing, automatic brightness, dynamic contrast, enhancing, De-noise, sharpness to zero, etc. Commercial Tv's might not have these features which maybe why they are easier for you. (Edit, just read you mentioned this maybe what it is)

Even filmmakers don't like these picture enhancing features - https://www.google.com/amp/s/gizmodo.com/lg-tvs-will-now-automatically-disable-the-dreaded-motio-1847962884/amp

Thanks for the reply! The interesting thing about these panels are they are still available as new. The technology in them is likely old (which I am certainly not complaining!). The units themselves are new though which extends the time I will own a usable panel.

Another positive for you is commercial Tv's are designed to run 24/7 and last longer. Makes me wonder if they found out that disabled dithering actually makes the TV last longer.
