HDMI-to-VGA adapter

I have a 2005-era LCD Samsung monitor sitting around and wanna try it out with my laptop. Will buy a HDMI-to-VGA adapter for the purpose. Any idea how to pick a "good" adapter?

I wanna share my experience with this monitor.
I picked a random cheap ($10) adapter. Then tested the screen and the result is that my right eye hurts from looking at the screen for 1hr. Which is weird because all other displays hurt my left eye.
Dang.
I thought that this screen would work for me, given that it's from 2005 when screens didn't use LED backlights.

BTW the "old smartphone camera" test didn't reveal flickering in the screen.

The other weird thing is that ditherig.exe doesn't seem to affect this screen - I mean, I've set it to "disable all dithering" but I still see no banding in gradients.

Update:
I have used this screen for 3 hours now (with short breaks every hour) and this is the longest I've been able to use any computer screen in nearly an year.

I've never seen ditherig impact an external monitor. From what I understand, external monitors are expected to implement their own dithering if needed, and do not/should not depend on the graphics chip to do it.

For the internal laptop display, it does depend on Intel graphics.

ditherig does work on external monitors because it works on the video card. The difference is subtle however and I don't use it because it's not needed on my display.

If your machine has a displayport output, I'd recommend getting a displayport-to instead of hdmi-to, because internally on most machines, the hdmi-out is actually an internal adapter.

As for which one, AMD used to publish ones that were eyefinity approved and that is a good starting point.
