How to correct astigmatism

@DanielK has had success by getting glasses that account for his astigmatism. I had a question for him, but he's currently not active on the forum, so I'm asking the rest of you:

For those of you who had a similar success like him:

How much astigmatism do you have in your eyes, and how much in your glasses' correction?

For example, if your doctor told you you have -1.00 astigmatism, do you get glasses that have -1.00 too? Or do you get glasses that have -0.25 astigmatism? Or how much?

Why I ask:

Gonna go to my personal ophthalmologist to ask for astigmatism glasses, and want to know what amount of correction to argue for.

Zodios Hi. My optometrist used a refractometer to measure my astigmatism and got a high number (esp. in left eye). But during the other tests I apparently rejected every kind of astigmatism correction that he tried. So I don't have astigmatism correction in my current glasses. I believe the reason for this strange result is that I have irregular astigmatism (meaning that a tiny pointlike lightsource doesn't look like a tiny straight line to me. Instead, it looks like some irregular shape).

logixoul Very interesting.. the reason I was curious is because I've never received a printout. They just grab a pen and scribble some numbers on a prescription pad and hand it over. I've never had one of these used.. just the traditional way where you sit in front and look at the chart on the wall while they insert lens in and out. Does this machine measure everything nicely, or do you still need to provide guidance?

Autorefractors give quick measurements that are "close" but not perfect. The eye doctor uses these as a starting point to then use the lens device and letters on the wall to dial in the prescription
