rtings just dropped their review on the Apple Studio Display and at least from their report it does not seem to use PWM https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/apple/studio-display

Though it still is 8bit +FRC for those “billions” of colours…

Also some more food for thought. I was looking at the Rtings flicker charts for their monitor and tv reviews. And I noticed that almost every single monitor and tv screen has low level high frequency backlight fluctuation. The TV with the least backlight fluctuation seems to be the LG QNED90. And the monitor with the least backlight fluctuation seems to be the Apple Studio Display and the Gigabyte AORUS FO48U OLED at minimum brightness only. The Gigabyte OLED monitor actually seems pretty intriguing. Does anyone know if it's true 10 bit?

edit: Actually nevermind, The hardware unboxed review shows that the minimum brightness on the gigabyte monitor is 1 nit.

I am torn wether or not to try the new Eizo Flexscan 2781. Likely no new panel or tech as compared to the rest of their EV lineup, but the connectivity is attractive over the 2795. I initially thought Eizo made their own LCD panels but it seems they don't. Their testing doesn't seem all that stringent after reading their own manufacturing article. My BenQ 2780T has washed colors and the level of detail is low due to it only being 1080P on a 27 inch monitor. On the plus side, I Can use the BenQ without the major issues newer I-devices and OLED TVs cause for me.

Eizo has their flicker-free technology as a buying point (as does BenQ). This is what initially brought them to my attention. I thought they could be a superior monitor manufacturer, but I am not 100% convinced. I will likely have to A/B them at some point. I do appreciate that their Flexscan lineup sticks to sRGB and doesn't attempt to produce colors outside of that range.

I've accidentally broken my EV2795 panel and ordered the same as well as Apple Studio Display to try it, still waiting on the Studio Display to decide, hopefully 8BIT+FRC won't be an issue 🤞

I believe the panel is the same on EV2781 and yes they don't manufacture their own panels, the good thing is that they have better Quality Control over other brands.
And they seem to have fix a small QC issue over their earlier models of EV2795 which was that both bottom corners of the panel protruded a bit.

Haven't used a BenQ monitor, so maybe I'm biased towards Eizo.

I am going to get the EV2781 when it releases. The worst thing that can happen is I have to return it. I've had a chat with technical support from Eizo and was given good info on their flicker free tech and where the DC dimming starts/stop and high frequency PWM kicks in. I don't think I'll ever dip low enough to use the PWM.

I did. The gentleman at Micro Center was nice enough to let me plug in my 13” M4 MBA with Stillcolor and Better Display enabled.

The improvement was incredibly minor. I did my best to run a 240 fps test for grey color flicker (I changed the background to grey). I couldn’t say for sure but I did pick up flicker. Full disclosure, it could’ve been from the LED lights in the store.

My sense from testing the MBA with other non-Apple monitors: if you find an internal MacBook screen uncomfortable, you will likely find the Studio Display uncomfortable. The MBA is clearly dithering on the hardware level and it would be unlikely that the Studio Display isn’t doing the same, or taking the dithered signal from the MBA.

I asked the Apple Store if I could plug the MBA into the Pro Display XDR. They wouldn’t let me. I don’t have $6K to try it at home unfortunately. Maybe I’ll win the lottery! 😂

I wanted to try in apple store yesterday, but you need admin permissions to install betterdisplay app 🙁 StillColor doesn't work for me, tried it before.
