I am finding increasingly that modern applications (at least in a Windows environment) are starting to cause strain/symptoms where they did not before.
A current list of applications that are not usable for me include:
VLC
MPV
Kodi
RetroArch
MAME
Some of these apps offer options to change rendering/drivers. VLC offers Direct3D9/11, DirextX, OpenGL and others. However while these make some difference to the image quality it still doesn't completely eliminate discomfort.
RetroArch offers different graphics drivers, such as D3D9/10/11, GL, SDL. This software gives me almost immedate discomfort (heavy eyes within minutes of use and inabiity to focus on the screen).
The key thing I've noticed is pretty much all the apps that cause issues are using Direct3D or equivalent for rendering (although I also get strain with GL options selected). Perhaps the moden way of drawing these apps can be made backwards compatible for older systems. Other emulators (VERY old, such as Kega Fusion and ZSNES) are super comfortable to use, but they rely on DirectDraw which is now obsolete.
I would be interested to know for those with a working AppleOS/*nix setup, can you run the latest applications above without any symptoms? Or any Windows users who use the above without issues?
