Few days ago I made such photodiode amplifier and it works pretty well. Using the regular red LED 5 mm, I was able to generate up to 130 kHz PWM (HW based PWM) on Raspberry Pi 4 to verify that the photodiode amplifier is able to reach such bandwidth.
I used the MacBook Pro 13'' 2020 (core i7) as a target device to confirm it has PWM as notebookcheck reported it should have it. PWM according to notebookcheck
Surprisingly, I was not able to detect any evidence of PWM there!
But I confirmed 'Response Time Black to White' 18.4 ms rise and 14 ms fall.
Now I have pretty powerful tools to detect PWM and other screen parameters.
