Lauda89 Same Sticking with the Mi11 for now.
iPhone 14 & 14 Pro PWM Megathread
markdotpeters5 Do you have no eye strain with Mi 11 Ultra?
They are two totally different panels though! The iphone X has a fixed PWM at 240hz and a less bright screen with a fixed frequency at 60 hz. This one has 2000nits of maximum brightness, a refresh rate ranging from 1 to 120 hz, and a PWM that looks dynamic.
Then consider that there is also different software, ios 14 vs. 16!
markdotpeters5 I will return with the iPhone X for another year, then I will try again with the iPhone 15 next year
Had an iphone 12, had to return it because it was impossible to use. big headaches and eye strain no matter how much i tweaked the settings.
heard the 13pro improved this a bit and maybe the 14 could work?
im using an 11 now with no issues.
blokes444 Great to see that Apple is somewhat moving the PWM frequency up compared to other manifacturers which are stuck at 480-240 (still way too low, easily spottable)
With how it's progressing, maybe the iPhone 17 might have an OLED that has decent PWM handling
(hopefully other manifacturers won't follow this trend… lol)
markdotpeters5 Thank you so much for this, saved me a whole order return hassle!
drima55 Well I assumed the same. But all the phones since the X have given me migraines, vertigo, brain fog etc.. ive tried X, Xs, 11, 12 pro, 12 pro max.. and returned them all (several times, from several attempts) but the 13 pro max was fine, it didnt give me a headache once in a space of a month using it every day as main device. (I did return due to brain fog) and that has a low refresh similar to the XS max which was awful for me.
So last week I tried the 13 pro and within a few minutes, I felt a dizzy, went home and had a headache. so frustrating. Ive felt rubbish since. The pro max's effect me less but the small ones with a higher refresh give me the worst headaches. So I think it just varies for everyone. Currently using an iPhone 8 plus lol.. I was hoping the 14 pro max with the LTPO screen would be better but n thinking other wise.
Have you people tried the "Reduce white point" option? (Simply search in settings for white point)
I got a 13 pro max instead of the 14, so maybe this option is working differently, but for me it helped greatly.
By default it sets to 80%, I was raising it to 90% and cranked brightness itself simply higher and now I'm all good.
This is maybe not related to PWM, but who knows, maybe it helps for that as well. I just hope this can help someone out there too!

tsb This is imo quite likely related to PWM coz when the brightness is set very high or at max on a phone with PWM the "OFF" part of the PWM cycle is much shorter than the "ON" part and this reduces the effect the PWM flicker has on us (even if the flicker isn't completely eliminated). So keeping the brightness slider very high or on max and then using the "reduce white point" accessibility setting to reduce the brightness to a comfortable level as you have done can help if we are sensitive to PWM flicker.
Some phones (like the 13 Pro Max according to notebookcheck I think) use PWM all the way up to 100% brightness but others have it only up to a lower value eg 62% or 99%. In phones that have it upto 100% it's most effective if you keep the brightness at 100% but on phones that have it only up to a lower point then it's ok to keep it just above that percentage, and then in both cases reduce the brightness using "reduce white point" on iPhones or iPads, or using overlay software like Twilight, for example, on Android.

Got my 14 Pro Max device delivered today. Unfortunately for me, the 14 Pro Max didn’t work out as the case was with 12 & 13 Pro max. After around 30-45 mins of usage, terrible eye strain, nausea & blurred vision. PWM all the way up to 100% brightness level it seems… So Regardless of PWM frequency bump for the 14 Pro’s , the issue still persists imo. Maybe different for others.
Right now SE3 and 8 plus are holding the fort for me. Great LCD displays, of course without PWM, resulting in no issues for the eyes whatsoever. Doesn’t matter how many hours you clock daily on these LCD display devices.
Tomorrow I will do another test with 14 PRo Max so as to be really sure and if it turns out to be same experience as of today, then I will return the device on Monday with a heavy heart (again like last 2 years in a row). Will update here the findings. I would suggest that please test yourself if you get a good return policy in place.
It's always worth a try, but the assumption that if one suffers from 240 Hz PWM, 1040 Hz PWM might somehow mitigate the problem may be wrong. The whole idea that there is a nearby threshold at which flicker would suddenly have no effects at all anymore may be wrong. I myself notice symptoms at 20,000 Hz, too. Don't let this discourage you from testing, but keep it in mind if you still have symptoms with 1040 Hz or higher.
iPhone 14 worked for me, no eye strain or headache. The hz is higher than the 13 is my assumption. Won’t know until notebookcheck releases the data, was told 1080hz is wrong on the 14, my eyes says different lol
drima55 None at all. it has DC dimming.
drima55 ooh, sorry realised I mis-read your question. I've never tried the Mi11 ultra, I have the Mi 11.
Ok, I give up! I tried the 14P for 2 days and today I feel really really bad!
It doesn't cause me any eye strain but i am totally disoriented as if I had a fever!
