  • Reminder/PSA: Set up automatic imaging to protect your PC from errant updates

We regularly see posts here about people who are hit with unwanted OS or software updates (Windows and Chrome seem to be the two biggest offenders) that render a good setup painful to use. You can safeguard against this by setting up automatic imaging of your PC's HDD so if this happens, you can easily restore to a previously known good state and block the update. This just happened to me last week and my imaging setup saved me.

You can pick up a 2TB USB external HDD for less than $100 these days. Buy one of those, then download Macrium Reflect Free edition. It's Free (as it says) and fairly simple to use. Set up a FULL (not incremental) image of your OS and Application drives (if they are not the same) to the USB HDD, and set the scheduler to run it weekly, and keep the most recent 4 or so images. This way is MS pushes out a new Windows 10 update that defeats your previous Update Blocker, or Chrome updates without asking you first, you have multiple images to restore to and have a usable PC again. Restoring is simple and takes less than 5 minutes.
