Are there any rules of thumb?

Hi all,

I need to buy a high spec laptop but can't physically go to a store to look at any before ordering, and am at a loss where to start.

What causes problems is clearly very individual, but are there any general tendencies? E.g. do GPUs for graphic design tend to be better/worse than gaming GPUs? Are there any brands that cause strain less often than others?

Most of my problems seem to be caused by flicker, so I need to avoid PWM, motion artefacts etc, but also to some degree by the intensity, especially at the blue end. I've tried contacting the manufacturers themselves but they are useless for that kind of advice, just say they don't know.

Any tips gratefully received.

You need to test it for yourself. Pick a store with a good return policy. Pick a laptop with lower nits full brightness(you'll run it at full brightness to minimise pwm). Install an older version of Windows like Windows 10 LTSC 2019 or just regular 1809 with updates disabled.

wlmsn If on windows, right click the start button -> device manager -> click and expand monitors -> right click on generic monitor -> properties -> details -> expand property and select hardware ids -> copy and paste value into google.

You can also use a third party tool like hwinfo.
