DisplaysShouldNotBeTVs
I want to chime in with a little more info. A HUGE disclaimer is that I have not proven any of this yet because there are multiple possible causes at this point. I didn’t even want to share it yet because I don’t want to scare anyone.
I got the 13-in MacBook Pro Touchbar M2. Didn’t have any of the same symptoms as the MacBook Air M4’s or my formerly usable iMac 2019 21.5-in 4K Retina (stabbing eye pain, dizziness, unable to focus) that were immediate.
What did happen is for about 2 weeks after using the device for maybe 20 min over 2 days I started having problems focusing my eyes period. It didn’t matter if it was a phone or a book or a street sign. I also got a pretty strong pressure in the center of my forehead when I did try to focus my eyes and it was so bad my left eye was closing constantly no matter what. Got so bad I actually went to the Emergency Room because I could barely open my left eye and kept getting myoclonic spasms. Light of any kind was triggering all this. My left leg kept giving out and I could barely walk. Terrifying.
The big caveat is unlike a lot of you here I have a ton of medical problems: POTS, IST, dysautonomia, long COVID, and I’m now being evaluated for a rheumatological autoimmune disease. Prior to my COVID infection in 2022 I could use all types of screens. And prior to a 2024 infection I could use my iMac 2019. At this point I have no idea what caused this. We were going through a heat wave on the East Coast of the US at the time. I may have gotten sick or something else triggered it. I have had issues with my left eye closing since COVID and myoclonic spasms off and on since living in an apartment with mold. Point being, there are tons of possible causes.
I have not used the MBP since. I wanted to let this calm down first, but needless to say, it is terrifying and regardless, I have to be careful. I can still use the iPhone 13.
I’ve actually found the schematics for the 13-in MBP and I’ve found videos of repair shops taking apart the display and revealing the backlight sheets, LED backlight bar, and other things. I compared it to the MBA and the Air has less diffusers and is much more reflective. The MiniLED Pros have tons of weird stuff going on. The one thing about the 13-in is that the LED beads are on the bottom of the device. I believe the Airs are, too. I have no idea if the Pros are because it wasn’t as detailed of a video. But I did confirm the screen tech is essentially the same on the 13-in Pro as it was in 2016. I’m waiting on the Carson Microflip microscope to take a look at the pixels.
If I can say anything based on intuitive hunches it’s that there are probably two things going on: flickering and light spectrum. The latter is easier to deal with through filters, glasses, etc. But the flickering is clearly affecting the brain depending on the frequency in susceptible people.
