Not a recent finding, but back when I was in the market for a new market around 5 years ago, I found that for me TN was good, but VA was not, holding everything else constant such as PWM, blue light filter etc.
Also for me at the time, the inclusion of a built in blue light filter within the monitor was a requirement. Using f.lux alone at the time was just not comfortable enough for me.
Overall, I would say I am quite picky with regards to even/uniform backlighting as well. Even after I decided on the monitor I wanted at the time (PG248Q), I returned 2-3 back for uneven backlight before deciding to keep the last one. For some reason, uneven backlight really bothers me because I wanted good blacks (for a TN).
The issue with VA I think is pixel inversion. The response time is just not fast enough for a regular VA despite the benefits in terms of contrast. When playing certain games, I could actually see a black line trail when an object moves across a white background. So VA was a no go.
IPS I think can be okay if the panel itself is good and doesn't exhibit obvious IPS glow symptoms. But I do have reason to believe that in terms of eye comfort it would be TN > IPS >>>> VA.
Even though TN is believed to produce the worst looking picture, I do believe it renders the most eye pleasing picture. Obvious drawbacks ofcourse like poor blacks, less accurate colors, poor contrast etc., relatively speaking. Best in class response times though.
