Sentiny a hardware display temporal dithering is still persists.
this is theorized to be true for the mini-LED models, but the "dark gray flicker" on e.g. M1/2/3 Airs is not temporal dithering I'm pretty sure. usually cameras can't see temporal dithering at all.
when filiming the dark gray flicker on m1air at 240hz, i can see it "scan" from top to bottom across the whole screen, so it seems like PWM or "slight brightness dips every frame" which is also a form of PWM (used in newer Android "DC dimming" OLEDs for instance)
regardless, this "low depth flicker" actually does not seem to be that much of a problem for me at least — because both m1 and m2 air have the same exact flicker on dark grays on camera. however, although i don't like m2air at all… i actually find m1air very usable, SO much more comfortable than m2air.
i've also captured the same dark gray flicker on 2015 12" MacBook and a 2012 Windows laptop which are actually both very usable to me.
ideally, i believe it would be even better if this flicker didn't exist (it would especially improve dark mode). however, unlike temporal dithering where even the most subtle dithering gives me SO many symptoms, this type of flicker seems to be fine for me.
in fact m1air is actually the laptop i kept in the end because it's "good enough" for me! more "relaxing" colors than all other Apple Silicon laptops, no harsh contrast, no oversaturated reds, dithering can be disabled, and the PWM brightness dips don't seem to affect me!
meanwhile, M2 Touch Bar Pro with panel ID starting with "FMX" didn't have the flicker on camera at ALL, which seemed good at first, but it was still causing a bunch of strain even with Stillcolor, very disorienting.
however, an M2 TB Pro with a panel ID with a bunch of "00000000" in it also didn't flicker at all, and that time it NOT cause anywhere near the same level of strain! much more comfortable than "FMX" panel
so this flicker doesn't seem to be affecting strain for me — it's something else that differs between e.g. m1 and m2 air
