look at this guys. when i look at this video my eyes feel like a saw was cutting through my eyes. whats wrong with this video?

Even in fullscreen, the video did not give me any eye strain on my safe laptop setup -- ThinkPad T480 + custom installed AUO B140RTN03.0 TN panel (100% backlight) + Basic Display Driver + ditherig.exe.

If it matters I'm also using Windows 1809 and Firefox ESR 115.12.0.

However, given the really up close perspectives of things and the shutter issue WhisperingWind noticed, as well as the higher than usual "oversharpening"/high-contrast edges type of effect I can see in the video, I can definitely see how this will cause strain with a bad monitor (or bad GPU postprocessing). My setup isn't affected by it though!

In addition, because I'm using Basic Display Driver I sometimes get a "tearing" effect similar to the shutter issue even when just scrolling or watching other videos, but even in those cases the tearing actually doesn't bother me at all on this panel. (Tearing does irritate me on strainy panels though)

The video features rapid panning, which causes motion blur and can theoretically lead to motion sickness. This can cause dizziness and nausea in some people. However, rapid panning is not the only issue here. The camera exhibits a rolling shutter effect. This is due to how image sensors in cameras capture frames. Instead of capturing the entire frame at once, a rolling shutter camera reads the image line by line. With fast camera movement, such as rapid panning, this can lead to distortions or delays in parts of the image, creating a skew or tilt effect on objects. This results in even more image distortion and motion blur. Altogether, this can lead to increased eye strain.

There's an issue on the operator's side, and unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about it.

Looked more closely. This seems to be strobing rather than rolling shutter, as the pattern isn't typical for rolling shutter. In the video, when the operator was filming the books, it was clearly visible that the edges of the books were jumping or flickering. This is characteristic of strobing. Rolling shutter typically results in a more "jelly-like" image, with delays consistently from one edge of the image.

Strobing in video recording refers to the visual effect that occurs when motion is captured in a way that causes moving objects to appear as if they are jumping or flickering, rather than moving smoothly. This can happen due to frame rate issues, shutter speed settings, or lighting conditions.

But in any case, it puts a lot of strain on the eyes, and it's the operator's oversight 🙂
