I am using all sorts of hardware. Right now, I do most of my home work on Dell Optiplex XE2 running Windows 7 and Lubuntu/Xubuntu as guests on virtualbox.
VirtualBox 7.0.22 + guest additions
Host OS: Windows 7 pro, updated to a certain point
Guest OS: Xubuntu 24.04, fully updated
Nvidia Quadro 600 (Fermi architecture), driver version 270.73 with fan speed set to manual 30 % because of noise (Nvidia System Tools 6.05)
Monitor Dell U2311H (e-IPS, CCFL) on DVI, brightness 50, contrast 45
Computer Dell Optiplex XE2, i7-4770S, 32 GB RAM
Disabled integrated GPU.
On another Optiplex XE2 I am using similar to above, except:
- AMD Radeon 6450 with driver from 2011.
- Monitor Dell 2209WA on DVI.
At work I am using much recent hardware, but I try to disable all graphics drivers and switch to Microsoft basic VGA driver.
Everything works, I can do all my work (watching youtube, text work, programming etc). If I need Windows, i have another new computer running Windows 10 to which I can connect via Remote Desktop. Xubuntu and Lubuntu are quite responsive even inside virtualbox. Running 4k videos, for example, works good enough.
