  • Should wait before buying HiBreak Pro?

  1. Is the better phone in the near future pipeline show that i should wait before buy HiBreak Pro?
  2. Is grayscale an absolute disadvantage? For example if you are browsing a webpage where some links are underlined with blue line and some other with purple line, will you figure out the difference with grayscale?
  3. I am reading about a huge gap between the layers of the screen of HiBreak Pro, what problems does this cause? Does it make viewing difficult?
  4. How does Boox Palma 2 compare with HiBreak Pro? It has a lower version Android and not dual SIM but it's also half price. Is its viewing better?

Thank you!

I tried the original Boox palma as well as the Bigme Hibreak color. The Boox was MUCH slower than the Bigme and I noticed how often I need color. I would look up things online and there we pictures, but I had no clue what was shown. People shared me photos and I had no clue. Certain parts of websites had the writing extremely faint because it was colored or a weird font and I had to crank up contrast to kinda being able to read it. I you need your phone for ANYTHING visual you need color.
I'm waiting for the color version of the Hibreak Pro to maybe get it, IF they get official Android support for it so we can use all the apps that need signing, like banking apps or authentication apps. The Hibreak Color unfortunately does not have that.

Thank you for the great insight.

Cannot we install custom Android 14 for Hisense A5 CC or HiBreak Color?

So excluding the screen, if the rest hardware is decent there shouldn't be any reason to wait for new color devices.

I think the Mudita Kompakt would be a more trustworthy phone because the manufacturer is based in Poland and it can be rooted and ADB isn't blocked. I'd never in a million years want to put a banking app on a Bigme.

Downsides to the Kompakt are: 4.3 inch screen and Android 12 (if I recall correctly).

Upsides: rootable, ADB works, headphone jack, there's a kill switch, etc.

I almost bought it, but I was under the impression there is no button to clear out ghosting (correct me if I'm wrong) and I had also put in an order for the upcoming Brax3 which they say has no PWM.

nostrain there shouldn't be any reason to wait for new color devices.

FYI the color pixels are at a lower resolution than the black pixels.

nostrain It's more like the Hibreak color is dog slow, while the Palma is unusably slow.
I'm not talking about the screen being slow either. I also had less buggy behavior on the Bigme.

I'm not sure how much if any better the Palma 2 is, but don't forget is has no sim support.

I did not find any indication that installing a custom rom for any of those phones has community support.

xenu The Kompakt has 3GB ram. Don't get something with 3GB ram in 2025.

Yes the color resolution was noticeably lower on the Hibreak Color. It still was what made the phone at least somewhat usable.

Did you actually try any of those black and white e-Ink phones? I have difficulty understanding how anyone could recommend non color e-Ink Smartphones after actually trying them. But maybe you use your phone just way differently to me and it's actually fine for you. I would really tell people to get color e-Ink if any e-Ink for a Smartphone.

          • xenu replied to this.

Intet No, I haven't tried them but many reviewers dislike the color e-ink screens.

Intet the Palma is unusably slow.

i've had no such issues with my Palma, i've even had 90+ tabs open in Chrome in the background (of course some of them are unloaded and not fully in memory, but still) and the rest of the device remains a very smooth experience, apps open quickly, typing on the touchscreen responds very accurately even when i type rapidly, and scrolling is fine in ultrafast refresh mode. I have Palma 1 fyi
