Ok, you have likely all seen my posts about finding a new car. I have some options, and I've ruled in or out a lot of things:
Lexus IS - these screens, while digital, are just fine for my eyes. The challenge? FINDING ONE that I want to drive. Lexus is maddening with their inexplicable refusal to put the most-needed features in one vehicle without adding a bunch of other crap at the same time. It's also at the top of my budget range. Still manageable, though.
Subaru (all): Just fine. My fallback is a Legacy Sport, which is likely 70% as fun as my WRX but 150% as comfy and likely to last longer.
Mercedes - 2021 CPO: The screens in 2021 are not immediately strain-inducing. After a half hour in the vehicle I still feel like I'm pretty ok, but it's not the slam dunk I'd hope for. I had one of these as a rental back in 2022 and drove around Europe for a week with it, but it's hard to say at this point 3 years later how good it really was. I can say with confidence that I had an ok week there, but I was working in weird lighting situations so my eyes were tired. How much of it was MB? Dunno.
Mazda: Mazda has switched to part-digital screens in 2025, and they're instantly strain-inducing. Which really sucks!
I did find a CPO 2021 Mercedes AMG GLA35 which is an AMAZING vehicle. I drove it yesterday and it felt great to drive and was comfortable and sporty and everything. I spent a good 30 minute with the screens. My eyes were tired afterwards but not sore and I did fine watching TV and using my computer and phone later on.
So the question is - do I get brave and take the risk on the Mercedes? Digital screens aren't going away. I can dim them, or put matte films over them, or any number of things if needed. My wife would love it, and if it didn't work out she'd be happy to drive that car and let me trade hers in around Christmastime, so the risk is only 6 months' worth. Do I put stock in my ability thus far to get used to every car we've owned? Or am I pushing my luck by getting this car? It's a stellar deal and a great vehicle which is why I'm so conflicted.
That said, my fallback is still the Legacy Sport.
