"Big changes" with iOS 19 later in summer - fall .... our chance?

Just a quick post that iOS 19 is expected to feature a lot of changes, I saw it called "the biggest change since iOS 7"

So, perhaps this will be a chance that early versions (19.0, 19.1…) could again have Temporal dithering disabled, like on 16 and 17.

Just for those of us who are stuck with a dithering iPhone anyway…

By the way, when you said early version of IOS 16, 17, do you include 16.2.1 and 17.2.1?

It would be nice but knowing Apple they’ll make dithering even worse 😭 introducing iOS 19 now with built in rave strobe lights.

I'm with @AshX on this one. I will wait by pessimistically.

I can see it now:

"We now support The Academy Color Encoding System (ACES). It covers a significantly larger range of colors than more common spaces like sRGB or DCI-P3. Your photos will never look the same with full 12-bit color."

Seriously though, if they do add some sort of eye care mode in accessibility (or anywhere else in the settings), it would certainly give some of us hope.

We need to make a stink about this on social media. I don’t think we can afford to just remain in our community here. Perhaps some legal language has to be thrown around to get Apple’s attention.

I wonder if this is true for MacOS as well. Why on earth they’d enable dithering in later versions of the same OS generation consistently is beyond me, unless they’re working out the kinks for displays for less capable models.

I recall someone saying MacOS Sequoia 15.1 was fine but 15.4.1 was not (I found neither to be fine on the M4 MBA, for what irs worth).

I suspect Apple is using dithering on certain devices more so than others, or perhaps the algorithm is more unpleasant.

The early versions (16.0, 16.1) of 16 and 17 had no dithering, it was only enabled later. So for 19 the same may be the case.

That may be true. I found IOS 18.1 is quite good in iphone XR. But 18.4 in iphone 11 causes instant strain.

I think it's a disservice to this issue to pin all potential software "methods" of causing eyestrain as temporal dithering. Some of us do know from research that there can be other software rendering tricks that can induce eyestrain that are not temporal dithering. This is an oversimplification of all the involved factors, but I believe if you want any hope at coordination with industry stakeholders, part of that issue is being able to demonstrate a consistent and evident "cause and effect" relationship. But that's not easy? Never said it was. 😉

JTL I don't know why I didn't consider this much earlier, but way before I had issues with displays, I noticed something. Around Christmas when a neighbor would put their lights up, I could not stare at them without feeling uneasy and disoriented. They had nothing but blue LEDs in their yard. Fast forward, some OLED displays use Blue LEDs with color filters. I know this only speaks for a subset of displays, but it adds to the point that I know for me the it isn't just temporal dithering, though I do highly suspect that is a large part of my display issues.

While drivers/software play a huge part in how displays can work, I'd also like to find more information on modern LEDs and if/what is different from many years ago.

Assuming the LED backlit devices you are concerned with are flicker free (assuming it has been ruled out by empirical tests). I would obtain a optical spectrometer device to measure spectrum.

I’ve often wondered whether it’s just blue light or whether said lights are flickering. I notice some very white LED headlights are bright but not horrific, whereas others are not as bright but painful. I’m guessing the latter are flickering badly. My sense was always that it’s a cumulative effect in a lot of situations.

I concur, and while this is different I wouldn't be surprised if that factor amplified certain issues resulting from screens.
