randomboolean This user is saying benign IPS screens cause 100X more issues than OLED. That's very bizarre, and judging by the exaggeration of the 100X adjective suggests the issue is more emotional/psychological than any kind of norm. Indeed, OLED is far more likely to cause issues than IPS based on countless anecdotes I've read.
I am using IPS now, have unconsciously avoided OLED since I'm not a smartphone person nor a gamer, and I am comfortable with the IPS devil I know versus something countless others say is causing them significant to severe issues. IPS isn't perfect but it's benign enough. It is not doing anything too damaging to me. I don't get headaches, and eye strain is mild, mainly from excessive use and/or inadequate sleep.
Another anecdote:
"This is such a big problem. I had to return so many phones before i learned about pwm. What is really strange though is that i have no problem with older oled screens such as S7Edge. I lieterally can look for 6 hours straight on my S7edge. But if i look for 10 mins on a S22 or Iphone 13 or whatever i am finished. I feel like passing out or vomit or smthn very strange feeling which is hard to describe. If you now look at the pwm frequency of the S7edge it is low as 240hz. Just like many other phones. So it is not just the frequency i feel like. But i understand not enough about the whole screen technology to say what exactly the culprit is. It is so frustrating not to be able to use all the new shiny phones."
Even if OLED doesn't cause one significant issues, it's clearly not a healthy technology with anecdotes such as the above appearing again and again.
You don't see the same anecdotes for IPS except a very rare and emotional outlier saying IPS is "one hundred times worse." User claims they have no mental issues except when using IPS.
Another anecdote of countless:
"It perfectly explained the sudden onset of my migraine and eye sight deterioration since using iPhone 12 Pro [OLED] . I can’t see the flashing but my eyes get blurry and tired quite easily. I’m having difficulty tracking rapid movement such as kids jumping on the trampoline triggers the reaction similar to motion sickness. I’ve seen eye physiotherapist, neurology physiotherapist, optometry surgeon, neurologist. The answer is optical nerve damage for some reason. Luckily my old iPhone 6s still works. I’ve changed the battery and hopefully my eyes will get better."
"Don't buy it [Galaxy S23] it's a nightmare for people with sensitive eyes!"
"I was so happy that I finally got a good phone (galaxy s23) but after 2 months I was having problems with my eyes, things sometimes were out of focus after looking at my phone, headaches or similar happened often, all this problems were worse at low brightness, good thing that I found more people with the same problem online, so sadly I was forced to sell it, now I have a cheap LCD screen and my eyes feel Way better, is like recovering slowly. Honor 90 have a screen with 3000pwm (or something like that) Hz so I am waiting for that phone to arrive officially to my country. Btw I wasn't able to see flickering in the screen, but my body reacted to it."
"i have poco x3 pro , its ips display is the only thing doesnt make me feel disgusted while looking at..."
"Dang! I am among those 10%. Used to think amoled phones are best and bought one last year. Since then my eyes hurt everyday! Amoled are the worst kind of screen. And yeah OLED are even more bad. Never purchasing them. My eyes can see those flickers."
"Thanks for covering this underreported topic. I can see the flicker but OLED screens rapidly damages my eyes giving me painful eye strain and making me unable to focus properly. I would really like to know if there is a difference between OLED scenes on this issue."
"I am one of the 10 percent and I never was able to use Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note 3. Decided to give AMOLED a chance after a while and bought a phone with one of the lowest AMOLED flickering on the market(on par with iPhone 13) - Poco F4 GT. Really wanted to like this phone and it was real good, but I just can't use it. After 30 min of looking at it, my eyes starting to feel like they are sanded, muscles behind pupils starting hurt, so as the brain itself
It is crazy that manufacturers go on with this experiment just leaving people with sensitive eyes behind. What are we going to buy? There is no good phone out there without AMOLED!!!!"
"I am also affected by OLED headache/eye strain after 10mins of use. I had to exchange an new OLED TV for a LCD/LED one. Two years later now the same with the iPad Pro M4 which has OLED an same bad effect on me. This flaw of technology should be wider known as it makes such gear unusable for PWM sensitive people ."
"Years ago I owned a Nokia lumina phone that had an oled screen. For some reason I began not to like the phone, for reasons I never fathomed, and gave it away (it cost me 415€) I have use LCD screen phones since then - for no reason other than I liked the phones. However late last year I bought an phone with an OLED screen. An Huawei Nova 9. It is a beautiful phone in every respect. Perfect for my needs, (I am 72 this year and really have no need of Google services) I watched YouTube, twitch, News etc and play simple games on it as well as keeping emails, shopping apps etc etc. over 78 different apps. However, around Christmas time I began to feel very dry eyes, I thought I'd caught a light cold or something. It just wouldn't go. So....I thought I'd caught a bug or maybe conjunctivitis. So I began to use eye drops etc. In May I began to save a little of my pension with hope of getting a good winter coat. However in June while reading an article from the UK (I now live in Estonia) I read that oled can hurt some people's eyes. I thought perhaps that is why I took a dislike to that nokia of old, also perhaps it is why my eyes hurt using this new Huawei? I began to see how much a new phone will cost me with a LCD screen. My gosh! A reasonable phone costs more than I could afford. However in July I noticed my eyes were bleeding at the outside edge. This has no health issue cause. I have had my lens due to cataracts replaced around 10 years ago so I understood some eye symptoms. I feared I was going blind as when I had the cataract surgery the specialist said she saw early signs of macular degeneration in both eyes. I was fearful that was the cause and it was being sped up by my use if oled. I decided to use my coat savings to buy this very cheap 140€ phone with an LCD screen. The first two days spent setting it up I noticed my eyes were not burning so much. Also I tend to see kind of an unusual edge definition with Oled, to anything shown on the screen, with LCD everything is again normal. I must face it I am one of the 10% that can not use an oled. Shame as the Huawei is a great phone. Is it possible to get it fitted with something to help?"
