Martin, do you have any updates for us?
I have a similar situation. I have problems with newer displays which have higher contrast and sharpness since 2010. My first problem display was the iPhone 4 and a Samsung LED TV screen. I had eye pain at the inner eye muscles (feels like headaches centered around the nose) after only a few minutes. Headaches could be there for up to 12 hours or longer when the exposure to the screen was longer than 15 mins and could also lead to tightness in my neck. Also, I often had dry eyes, especially in the winter and was very light sensitive in general, e.g. brighter led headlights in trains, busses, offices.
5 Years ago, in my mid-twenties, I was diagnosed with heterophoria lazy eye (exophoria). I then figured out that I got double vision (two images up to 30cm apart at a distance of 1 meter) when I relax my eyes. Then I got prismatic glasses before the surgery to determine the right way to operate on my eyes. Prismatic glasses improved my situation steadily but very slowly. I had surgery two years ago (40PD), which further improved my condition. I still had double vision after the operation, but the distance was only around 4-5cm instead of 40cm).
I now have rarely dry eyes, less trouble with led light bulbs and can use modern smartphones and screens with less discomfort, but I would still not like to "work" on them. There is still much tightness around the inner eye muscles, but from year to year, it still gets better. At the moment, I have prismatic glasses (6PD) and with them a distance of 1,5cm at 1m to the object focus between my double vision images when I relax my eyes.
An interesting fact is that I now can way better concentrate than ever before. I assume that this is because my brain doesn't need to fuse the two images which were previously very far away. Now it mostly works mechanically through my eye muscles.
However, if I need to concentrate, it is still more pleasant to use old displays (less contrast and sharpness), since they don't encourage full mechanical fusion (eye muscles).
That's why I mainly work on an RF511 Samsung Laptop with a screen (non-glare) of an RF510 laptop which worked better for me. It has an LED screen, but it is very low resolution, TN and very low contrast (132:1). Today, since I found ledstrain only two days ago, I also bought a dell 2407 and 2410 from eBay due to the recommendation here.
I also do I eye exercises for five months now which help but only in combination with prismatic glasses in my case, since the most improvements I got through new prismatic lenses. However, I only do 5 minutes of them every day, since otherwise, my eyes feel tired all the time. Martin or others, maybe I have to power through for two weeks e.g. 3x 10min a day? How is your schedule exactly, and your experience?
