Agreed. If true, this is at least an acknowledgment of the effort of users here, Reddit, on tech sites and YouTube, as well as those of us who made format complaints to Apple in-store and with support.
The implementation will be key. Theoretically it should be possible purely using software, but I’m concerned that they may not have done the work necessary on the hardware side. I also don’t know how on Earth you’re going to get a truly flicker-free display when it can hit 3000 nits peak brightness with HDR content. This is also to say nothing of dithering on iOS 26, which is arguably just as much of a problem. The Pixel 10 Pro also has a eye safe mode that merely doubles the PWM frequency to 480Hz.
I will take this news positively because it confirms to a that it is possible to do what we have all be asking for: an Accessibility toggle to disable flicker. There’s no reason they can’t do this with dithering (Stillcolor is proof it is easy) and also with TCON FRC on their computers. This is an Accessibility issue and we would all gladly utilize these options at the expense of battery life, brightness, and color accuracy, just as those with other visual, auditory, and neurological disabilities already utilize various features in the Accessibility settings of Apple devices. It is time we all collectively are treated with the same care as others with disabilities, especially in the wake of the pandemic and long COVID’s continued prevalence.
