So I’ve used several E Ink devices over time — tablets, phones, monitors, and laptops. I’ve been using the Lenovo ThinkBook Plus Gen 4 (color E Ink) and the Dasung HD-FT 13.3 as my main devices until just recently. I also own a Dasung 253, though I haven’t used it much lately.
Recently, I picked up a Boox Mira Pro (non–front light model), and for the first time, I’ve noticed that my distance vision feels more relaxed and focused.
I’ve also tried the Dasung Revo monitor, and while it looks smooth, it uses an automatic ghost-clearing algorithm that gives the illusion of cleaner motion. However, it introduces a kind of motion blur that negatively affects my vestibular system, making it feel unnatural and disorienting. The Bigme 251 monitor seems to use a similar algorithm — though not as harsh as Dasung’s — and neither offer a setting to disable it. In contrast, the Boox Mira Pro doesn’t seem to use that type of processing at all, which makes it feel much more natural and stable to look at.
With the Mira Pro, I’m using Image Mode in the Mira PC software. I also disabled the “Anti-shake” option — not entirely sure what it does, but I assume it reduces flicker with some kind of algorithm. I prefer keeping things as basic as possible, so I leave it disabled. The blacks in this mode appear more washed out (a dark gray), which actually feels great on my eyes. I’m also using Windows High Contrast Dark Mode, and ghosting in this setup is surprisingly minimal.
One thing I really like about Boox is how it lets you manually adjust black and white levels. Since I deal with pattern glare, I think the washed-out black is part of why this setup feels easier on my eyes. Overall, I’ve noticed my head and neck feel less tense, my sleep quality has improved, and I feel less “hooked” to the screen. It’s easier to take breaks without that restless urge to keep browsing. I also feel less wired after I get off the screen.
Right now, I’m using the Mira Pro connected to an HP Spectre x360 (aw0003dx) over USB-C/Thunderbolt (DP), running Windows 10 LTSC 2021. My display scale is set to 250%, which I like since it makes everything easier to see. This Mira Pro already came with the beta 10 firmware, and its refresh speed is excellent for E Ink.
For lighting, I have a window behind me during the day, with an incandescent chandelier overhead. At night, I dim the chandelier and use a Zelco incandescent clamp-on book light (I plan to add a second one soon).
I just wanted to share this experience because it’s the first time I’ve noticed positive changes this quickly. I’m hoping the lingering brain fog and disconnected feeling will fade over time. I’ll probably still experiment with some CCFL monitors and RLCD displays in the future, but for now, this setup feels like a step forward.
