Good find. That would explain why I could use Chrome for years since version 1, and only recent versions introduced eye strain. Though I wonder if DirectWrite depends on enabled hardware acceleration, because I definitely disabled the latter. It's worth another try for sure.

I tried playing Far Cry 3 recently and it caused eyestrain very quickly. My eyes kept losing focus, which caused me to have to consciously try and focus on the image. On the other hand I can play Half-Life 2 with no eyestrain at all. The image is clear and crisp and my eyes have no problem focusing. There is some kind of post-processing motion blur crap applied to Far Cry 3 that I can't eliminate through menu settings. I think a lot of that stuff that confuses our eyes is not available in DX9. which may explain my success with HL2.

degen Odd. Try disabling motion blur using settings/third party tools. I really only play CS:GO and Minecraft (spend more time doing programming and schoolwork) so I can't help you.

Why I can't play Far Cry is much more important to me than the fact that I can't. I'm always trying to identify triggers.

Do you have any ideas of what in the games rendering engine could be doing to causing it? CS:GO runs on DX9 still. I have played Dirt 3 with no problems on various AMD and nVidia cards in the past year, which runs on DX11.

Slacor hey, sounds like we're monitor buddies, but youre on linux, so you can turn off dithering.

i dont think you've posted anything about overclocking - that was key for me. occasionally it will lose its settings and i can tell immediately.

      i'm running at 74hz.
      settings: front porch- 30 3; sync 40 4; total px - 2035 1094

Slacor also i'd like to figure out how to get the nvidia card to push out 6 bit color to the monitor so it doesnt have to frc dither down 8>6.

i dont think you've posted anything about overclocking

How did you go about that?

Slacor it's in custom resolution settings on the standard nvidia app. i'm sure it's on the linux one too, but yours looks very different than mine

Ah.. yeah mine looks something like this for the refresh rates. You can just input some number?

        EDIT:
I see the image now, yup. Hmm...

So the 1280x1024 resolution has a 75 refresh rate
Everything is all stretched out and weird now but I'll try it out for a bit 😛

Slacor I'd be rather worried about the upscaling giving you a headache due to blurry fonts, which happens in my case.

I did have an old Dell CCFL monitor from long ago which native resolution was 1280x1024 @ 75 hz.

I split your post (and subsequent replies) to a new thread.
it will be better served as its own question rather then appended to one focused on Dell U2414H as well as being easier to find (SEO and otherwise)
          https://ledstrain.org/d/249-benq-ew2440l-monitor

As a note: Let's try to keep these threads to one topic.
Replying to a post and including its contents like the above link shows is a good way to split off a thread to a new topic 👍

I use a Dell P2214H, might be a close cousin, I dunno, but I can use it fine with the correct color profile loaded

i've seen the dell u24xx range mentioned as very successful here in multiple threads (and I agree). does anyone know of a 27" dell with the same quality that has 0 issues?

            2 years later

ensete Which operating system do you use with your Dell P2214H monitor ? Any unique settings ?
