Hi there, I'm Greg, 26, from Philadelphia, USA. I stumbled on this forum from the Hacker News post today. This intro includes my story and some things I'm working on that you might be interested in.
My story:
My first word was "light." I've always been obsessed with lighting, and in college, I worked in a lab studying the links between light and health—mostly the effects of blue light on the circadian rhythm.
I started and sold the first circadian lighting controls company (f.lux for your lighting) and now I have a new healthy lighting company, SimpleBulb Inc. Our first product, Bedtime Bulb, is a low-blue and low-flicker light bulb for healthy sleep (more about this below).
While I don't notice any health effects from flicker/dithering, I can perceive it often and find it quite annoying. I used to get dizzy with CRT monitors/TVs, although I don't seem to have that problem with LCDs and LED lighting/backlights. It is unfortunate that most of the "vintage-style" LEDs preferred by restaurants use cheap drivers that flicker like crazy! Additionally, flicker totally messes with my photography/videography.
What I'm working on:
Bedtime Bulb: The light bulb for healthy sleep. This is a light you use in the evening before bed. It has less sleep-distrurbing blue/green light than any other "low-blue" product on the market. It also has better flicker than other "flicker free" light bulbs: rated at <1% at 120 Hz, although every Bedtime Bulb we have tested clocks in at <0.1%. [Side note: Did you know that lighting can have up to 30% flicker and still claim to be flicker-free?]

Beautiful Photometry Library: I was unhappy with all the photometric calculation tools out there, and the graphs most of them produce are just plain ugly. I have been working on a Python library that generates great-looking SPDs and also calculates a bunch of relevant lighting specs.
