It's hard to imagine today, but street lights weren't common until the mid-1800s.
This month, I'm starting a new video series called The Story of Light. While we've lived with fire practically forever, I'm more interested in our modern relationship with light. I want to explore the various developments that have changed our living standards, work habits, and health. This will all lead up to the current discussion around LED lighting.
I think there's no better place to begin than with gas lighting. Over a half-century before the Edison and Swan incandescent bulbs, open-flame gas street lights were cropping up all over the Western world.
If you know where to look, you can still find rare examples of gas lighting today.
