  • It is e ink with front lightning a valid alrernative?

Hi!
It is e ink smartphone very valid alternative to an lcd smartphone for eye strain? Or will the front light implemented in smartphones like Hisense A5 have a bad impact on the eyes?

Hi there, I have a Hisense e-ink smartphone.

long story short, I feel it doesn’t help with eye strain unfortunately due to 2 main reasons:
    1) the frontlight sucks -
...it’s brightness doesn’t auto adjust and requires a laborious process to manually adjust.. and then it’s too bright for reading in the dark even on its lowest setting... it’s really frustrating for them to screw up these little thing

    2) contrast & clarity are terrible -
... in trying to fight the slow laggy nature of eink, the hisense screen reverts to being completely black & white (it takes longer for eink to drive grays than just from b <-> w), and then it uses a technique called dithering to fake grays by basically putting white dots in black areas to trick your eyes.. but it has the effect of really reducing contrast and clarity, and I’m not a fan.

maybe if the content on the phone was meant for B & W screen and didn’t use so much color and grays it would be a lot better

.. but till that happens, it’s kinda a miserable experience.

I find myself using the LCD side of the phone more even though it causes eye strain which is a pretty damming indictment for the eink sign since I paid a lot of money specifically for that.

I hope they improve it in the newer ones, but I’m not optimistic since this strikes more of a software problem even if its roots are in hardware.
(Ps though I did hear about how much damn work it took to make a frontlight fit in such a narrow space)

My experience is eink phones saved my life. First with the yotaphone 2, and then with Hisense A2 pro. Hisense A5 gives me eyestrain, probably for having android 9, and Hisense A6 it has never been in my hands, but it will sooner or later, as it have a very good hardware and worth a try
