Someone says:

edge lit is better for my eyes. instead of light facing at you eventually irritating your eyes, you have lights facing away from from you. thats just me. best tv i ever liked was edge lit. sony 55802A 2013

Any experience here with benefits from one or the other?

Are all contemporary LCD computer displays edge lit even when they're not very thin? I guess that explains the glow often seen around the edges of displays, some very obnoxiously.

ive tried edge lit and full array backlit.......its the contrast ratio thats the important number. keep it under 1000:1

My old TV 43WD750 was edge led and it was fine for me 100% any content... my TV now has a direct LED and I have problems🙁

I always wondered about the construction and firing mechanisms/sequencing of backlights and whether that's part of my difficulties. Of course proving anything is nigh on impossible.

All I can help with is my own personal experience and I can understand what works for me may not work for everyone. I've had both edge lit and full array backlit and had pain with both. Just sold a Panasonic gx800 and that was edge lit and I had to replace it. I've just looked at a review on notebook check for a Microsoft surface Pro 2 I used to own and display was very comfortable and it had a contrast ratio of 700:1. I have had real problems with lots of mobile phones too and now i research the contrast ratio before I purchase. I currently own an HONOR 20 mobile with a ratio of 850:1 and I can stare at it all day. I even get comments from work mates saying "wow that screen is so clear". I'm not claiming I've solved the mystery for all of us but it's a massive factor for me.
