So, sadly my Dell 2407 has expired. Capacitors (I've learned) are worn out and are generating a vertical line checkerboard across much of the screen. I've had this monitor for years, mostly working very well on my Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 GPU.
Sure, there have been speed bumps along the way - with the latest Windows 2404 release having to be rolled back due to eye strain, and occurrences in the past of eye strain that have cleared - perhaps with Windows updates. Right now I've been pretty happy with Win 10 1909.
So... I plug in my 'spare' 2407 monitor (exact same hardware revision A04) and... eye strain!
So I plug in my 2410 monitor that I have used with moderate success on a spare laptop and... even more eye strain. I then tried HDMI, instead of my normal DVI, full and limited colour range and no joy - even if it did look a little more smooth to the eye.
Right then, time to plug in my Dell 2407-WFP - my other super trusty screen that I used happily on an AMD 6950 for YEARS, and.............. eye strain (bordering on migraine).
Aaaargh!
These are the SAME screens, ones I've used happily, but now(?) they're no good. There's no rhyme or reason for this and I'm just stumped. I've set colour profiles, I've tried the HDMI angles, checked brightness (PWM) settings etc etc.
Frankly I'm about to give up in abject frustration... despite my best efforts stockpiling 'good' monitors. All I can think of is Windows rebuilds using older versions, although even there with previous go rounds I've had problems with eye strain that I cannot explain.
Oh and YES, I've just had my eyes re-checked. No shift in prescription and apparently 3d seems OK.
Anyway - I just had to vent.
