glvn can you write your detailed OLD config?
I sure can - for the battle continues - with no real success.
motherboard/ OS(version_build)/ possibly registry tweaks?/ GPU driver version/ interface(DP_DVI_HDMI)/ monitor
Gigabyte GA-Z97X-UD5H mobo (AHCI), Intel 4709K CPU, 32GB DDR3 RAM, Various Win 10 builds - up to 1909 (2404 was not so good), no registry tweaks I recall, Gigabyte G1 Gaming 970 (Rev 1.0, Hynix Ram), multiple GPU drivers, Dell 2407-WFP monitor
This trusty setup has worked VERY well for years with various Win10 releases and GPU driver versions. Some problems (eye strain) have occurred from time to time (eg Win 2404) and with a few specific applications (Chrome, Prepar3d) but otherwise - it just worked!

The above was updated following my SSD/mobo failure as follows:
Z490 AORUS ELITE AC mobo, Intel 10700K 32GB DDR4 RAM, Various Win 10 builds (tried 1507, 1607, 1903, 1909), reg tweaks tried outlined below, same Gigabyte 970 GPU, various drivers, Dell 2407-WFP or Dell 2407-WFP-HC or Dell 2410.
I have tried:
- DVI to monitor
- HDMI to monitor (2410, full and limited colour range, as full supposedly eliminates dithering)
- DP to monitor (2410)
- Registry entries to disable dithering (only on Win 10 1903)
- Using RGB mode on Dell 2410 as I've read it disables dithering
- The Nvidia dithering settings (I AM seeing banding in that Ubisoft image everyone refers to - but it could be the screen not dithering, and maybe my GPU still is...)
- High brightness to prevent PWM
- Updated VBIOS on video card
- Swapped out video card for an identical model (same HW version/RAM etc but with older VBIOS).
- Made sure to absolutely disable onboard CPU video controller
After all that lot and trying numerous permutations I'm about out of ideas... 🙁
try using CSM+MBR boot mode, instead native UEFI+GPT (may need reinstallation Windows)
Interesting idea, as I'm to the point where I think my gear is fine and something ELSE has changed at a low level that's triggered my inability to get any working combination when it was all just fine before. That's why I swapped the video card in case some low level hardware setting had been change, (and why I tried another video vbios.
What makes you suggest this??
[Building on this I did go through an exercise a while back with my original hardware of trying various clean Win 10 and Win 7 installs and it occurs to me I struggled to get a working version that was good for my eyes. Why that was I dunno, and I continued with my prior long term Win 10 install. Maybe there was something specific about that install that made it safe. No idea what it was of course].
Tried that - no joy... I couldn't find a network driver which was problematic for install time so jumped to 1607.
Yeah - I may have to try Win 7 again, as a last gasp. I've certainly used Win 7 previously. I've also been trying the registry tweaks, but of course that's complicated by the various Win 10 versions and Nvidia driver support.
I'll take my GPU and screen back to the original setup as well, although that screen was showing its age with vertical lines.
try standard VGA driver (only for testing)
One more data point - it's all comfortable using the generic display driver UNTIL I install the Nvidia driver... This is of course no good for flight sims/racing sims - both of which I'm in serious withdrawal over right now!
Thanks for the input. My OTHER known good working computer (Work macbook) failed recently and I was facing the terrifying prospect of NO good computer gear. Fortunately it was resurrected with an SSD swap - PHEW - but I really do need my home PC working again.
