glvn AgentX20 Dell 2407 (my original screen - that used to work, but is now showing some vertical banding due to tired capacitors
vertical banding or colored thin(1pix) vertical lines ? If vertical lines - it's not a tired capacitors, this is a "one way ticket" 🙁
It is faint banding that shows against certain colours - and is definitely not dead pixel columns. I did some digging and read reports of this happening elsewhere. It's just old and tired...
"Game mode" in 2407 setup menu ? Are you sure the 2407 is built on a 6+FRC panel? I'm not sure if any monitor allows you to control the FRC of its LCD panel
I believe the 2407 is an 8 bit screen, and cannot really say if it has dithering. But with Game mode enabled I can see more banding on image gradients which makes me think it is turning something off.
Yeah, it's a specific monitor mode alongside Desktop, Game, Multimedia etc.
I suppose this "bad" thing is GPU temporal-dithering. and this is an independent thing from FRC(LCD panel dithering).
perhaps this combination GPU temporal-dithering and FRC, perhaps bad Vcom, perhaps.. perhaps..
That's the thing, it could be PWM (why I use higher brightness), Dithering, or the Windows compositor or something else entirely. We just don't know.
your old monitor may have low brightness due to age, high brightness is one of the main causes of eyestrain
Yes, which is why I set high brightness on the monitor to avoid PWM, and then use the GPU controls to dim the image. Despite their age these screens are still capable of going plenty bright enough.
I have a USB card, owing to the very poor USB resource pool size on my previous motherboard chipset and the numerous gadgets I need to plug in.
in my case: C2D+P45+GF1030+385.69(excuse me)+Win7 - I feel the difference 🙂
That's great - there are very few folks with 10 series Nvidia cards who are "all good" round here. I'm jealous!
I'm underway trying things you've outlined, but it's too early to report back on anything specific.
