Alright

So recently now that my visions been getting better with new medical treatment I've been able to use my Macbook Pro for over 8 hours a day, just like I was able to use computers years ago before this "problem" and are close to functionally "cured" as I've been in years.

Anyways. I've tried to get my old desktop working again with Ubuntu MATE 16.04 (and configured the font rendering properly to avoid antialiasing blur) and I notice that GPU dithering might be an issue for me. Luckily it only seems to be a problem after an hour or more, but my end goal is to build a faster desktop CPU wise and just use my Macbook for traveling.

I've tried using the below monitors with my Macbook and do notice some dithering with the below monitors and my Macbook, although it doesn't seem really bothersome. Maybe the higher resolution of the Macbook screen (2880x1800) masks the dithering? Would be interesting to look into.

GPU's I've tested:
- EVGA GTX 560 (maybe some strain)
- ASUS AMD R9 270X (new AMD opensource driver doesn't allow you to disable temporal dithering, and I can't seem to recompile the kernel yet)

Monitors tested.
- BenQ GW2760HS
- Dell 1905FP (early VA/IPS? panel from circa 2005, CCFL, no PWM, 1280x1024, presumed native 8-bit)

My end goal is after I get my desktop working is to look into getting the Dell UP3017 (30" 2560x1440 IPS, possibly 10-bit without dithering) from a store with a good return policy. Yes, it's expensive but now that my visions getting better I've been doing more photo editing and programming and would like a monitor that is "good enough" for the next few years.
