randomboolean I have had a good experience with Samsung J7 Max (with Mediatek cpu and PLS screen). You should try this or equivalent hardware . No other phones are usable for me. However Lenovo K8 note and K8 plus which have mediatek cpus (I think the Mali gpu is the good one) wuth IPS screens are usable for short times with less strain. The brightness setting has to be low for me to use any of these phones.
Overall I think LED backlights should be discarded due to eye damage issues but cost considerations will have manufacturers ignore this. After reading about the J3 doing ok, I have had a great time with the Samsung J7 Max, which had a Mali GPU, Mediatek CPU, PLS screen NOT Amoled (all other J7 models have amoled). No issues at all on low brightness.
Had great success with a Samsung J7 Max. Specifically this nomenclature. It uses a Mali GPU, Mediatek CPU, PLS Screen. Zero headaches at low brightness.
randomboolean Android is version 7. 'Less' means that I get strain after about 30 minutes, but no migraines, just that the eyes get tired. Significantly there are no migrainous symptoms like nausea, etc. for about that much time. On increasing the brightness to say 20%, mild symptoms do appear after about 10-15 minutes, though not as severe as they do with other phones so far. It's hence possible to get some quick work done.
I have noticed that 2 lenovo phones k8note and k8plus cause less eye strain, though I have to tint the screen yellowish using a blue light reducing app. Both these phones use Mali gpu and Mediatek cpu. Also the LCDs seem to be slightly older tech without eye-popping colour.

Guys n gals am sad to say that the latest 2 software updates to iPhone 7 n ipad have ruined it for me. All was well and they have done something that now gives me insta-headaches on iPhone 7 and delayed headaches on iPad 2017. It's something to do with the GPU driver am quite certain. On the same hunch I picked up an el-cheapo Lenovo K8 Plus (Mali GPU) and it is fine thus far on moderate use with a blue light filter app on to dull the whites. Adreno and Power GPUs seem to be upsetting my system for no known reason.. This seems to be a part of the problem.
Update: Have been using iphone 7 since over 1 month now with no strain issues when used for reasonable amounts of time, like 30-40 minutes at a time. I avoid going beyond that. IOS updates have not changed this. The 2017 ipad is usable for 3-4 hours without any strain. No luck with any android phone so far. I do not use night shift or colour correction. I just use 'Reduce white point' to 80% and this yields 0 eye strain over the aforesaid time periods. Trying to changethe 'reduce white point' setting to 50-60% did result in mild strain hence I just leave it at 80%. I also use low brightness levels. Generally I don't go above 30% except in sunlight. I also use a matte screen guard (Tech Armor) to reduce reflections, though until I installed it (3 days after purchase) I hadn't noticed any significant strain.
I read that the iphone 8 has the same screen tech hence maybe some people would find that equally good. I tested the screen tone feature on iphone 8 at a store and found it gave rise to eye strain instantly, so that should probably be avoided.
I hope we see some usable android phones soon with the cost of iphones going thru the roof. Do post here if anyone has similar results with the iphone 7 or 7 plus or 8 series using the settings I mentioned. Iphone X too.If anyone gets a chance to test the honor 8 pro pls post the results. As far as I can see iphone 7 has nailed it for us led strainers....ipad 2017 is gr8 too....but it would be great to have an android phone/phab that is easy on the eyes too.
ensete I am at present using a tech armor matte HD for my iphone 6, and it has helped else it was unusable. On the ipad 2017 I did not need anything. In general matte screen protectors help and I believe this is due to it making the light more diffuse and
less direct. Cfl lights were more diffuse and in general I think LEDs have a harsh more direct sort of light.I can say with certainty that Apple has done something to address this. The new ipad 9.7" 2017 does not cause me eye strain over hours and the iphone 7 over the short time I spent did not cause me any strain as well. The best result is with my old iphone 5 but 6 & 6s cause a lot of strain. Samsung is terrible all models after galaxy s2 cause immediate strain. I hope someone tests the new sony xperia phones so we can know how they are. I prefer android but am stuck becuase only these Apple devices can be tolerated by me..
Added tech armor Matte screen protector on my iphone 6 , eyestrain (migraine) has reduced considerably, though it does come after a longer time.
I also noticed reduced eye strain on my Benq VA monitor by using it's native color profile. It has anyway been very good to my eyes, but when I did this about 3 months ago and it got better.
I also found that iphone 7 is quite ok. Samsung S8 causes instant migraine. Has anyone used Sony Z5 or Lenovo Phab 2- Edited
I find it better when I use iPhone 6 at greater than 30% brightness with reduce white point setting (accessibility- display optimisations) set at 100%. I also use darker colours ON & have adjusted colour filter to provide a very slight yellow tint. This combo allows me to use the phone for a long time. The iPhone 5 I have however is absolutely perfect in as much as there is no strain at all. I also experience no strain on Xiaomi Mi Pad, but all their other devices like Mi5, Mi Max etc cause strain. Samsung is taboo for eye people
