Just tried but it doesn't seem to change anything for youtube. I think it's just the website increasing the saturation. It's visible in the thumbnails, but once you play the video, it looks normal, no more oversaturation.

Ok, I noticed the change this morning (in europe). Overall, colors, especially thumbnails are much more punchy and reddish, whis this "funny cartoonish" vibe.

And as I am allergic to saturated colors, it's quite annoying for me since I used youtube daily. But now, I just can't. Saturated colors mess up with my brain quite badly.

  • I feel like colors suddenly became more punchy and saturated. Is it just me ?

Didn't know about this software ColorControl. I'll check it out.

I look for a laptop specifically. And i'm too afraid to get a new or recent one knowing that in my country I can't give it back if I'm not satisfied. I'll probably just look for an old one, pre 2016.

  • I'm curious as if some people use old gpus (nvidia before 1000 series), (intel hd530 or earlier) and old monitors but sill have issues.

I know for a fact software (os version, updates, drivers) can cause issues.

  • After seconds of the vpn being on, my eyes get watery and painful. It must change something to google chrome settings. I find this very interesting.
There is 0 placebo effect, I would have never expected this. The watery eyes are very real. And it goes away when I turn off the vpn.

I'm pretty sure I also have this but i'm sure also sensitive to pwm at least.
In general it seems the rendering in new cars dashboards are so "lively", reddish, very punchy and saturated. It's impossible for me to drive those.

I think everything contributes to issues. All types of flickering, but also oversaturation and different types of rendering.
I've experienced so many different combinations of hardware/software and something that I have noticed is how inconsistent the "results are".
After 3 years on this, I can't say that I know for sure more than at the beginning, which is crazy.
A same motherboard, same hardware, same software and you can have different experiences.
Sometimes, in my laptop even unplugging and replugging the screen can trigger a different visual experience. And I have to replug it many times and even reinstalling windows to get it back to "normal".
Even websites have different rendering now.
I also noticed that a windows update can change the rendering but then it doesn't get back to how it was even if you reinstall windows. Which means a windows update can trigger something directly in your hardware (gpus i suppose) and it doesn't get back by itself...
I've given up trying to figure out everything cause it's vain. There are too many parameters, image rendering is getting more and more uselessly complex.

I just try to find something that works and stick with it.

Are you sure the issue comes from the screen and not the laptop ? Maybe you should try the boe panel on your old laptop, and the innolux panel on your new one and compare.

    • ensete but regardless, based on all the data I have seen our screen issues are almost 100% guaranteed to be a software issue, not hardware

I had a lenovo laptop that died cause i changed the screen while the charger was plugged. Got the EXACT same laptop mobo from aliexpress. And yet the image and feeling/sensation in front of the screen was 100% different. Everything else software related was the same.

By preventing igpu and dgpu drivers installation which is easy to do through device manager, you would rule out gpu software related issues yet people still have issues.
Remaining software is windows but then why the same windows version wouldn't cause issues 5 years ago but cause issues now for some people ?

    • jordan Right now, a lenovo legion 15 ICH laptop. CPU : i5 8300hq. iGPU : intel uhd 630. dGPU : nvidia gtx 1050.

    • Kev It is not optimal for sure but some people here just want something to be able to work, they can't afford to be too nit-picky. Don't forget what works for someone won't necessarily work for you, so if you have the means to keep trying recent tech, go for it, but it's expensive and time consuming.

    • I think certain aggressive and grainy coatings can be annoying but it's definitely not a primary cause of eye strain.

    • Donux I've given up on new tech for now, be it smartphone, laptop, car. I only run "old" and my eyes thank me. Only modern display I have is a msi g2412 gaming monitor that i use sometimes with my laptop.

    • JTL I confirm that. Had exactly a macbook pro 2015 with Sierra and it was a horrible display.
      I would stick with windows.

    • It's not a rule but I would advise to get an old windows laptop with a bit older tech. Something pre 2017 ideally. Older cpu and gpu have less chance to dither. And screens will most likely be pure 6 bits. At worse, if screen has pwm or you don't like it, it's easily replaceable.

      • Kev replied to this.
      • Vip 15.7.8 compared to 15.8 could be sufficient to make the screen completely different, unfortunately.
