  • I was thinking if we had that data and perhaps we could all complete a really robust survey that includes things like the questions below. I can build the survey and make all captured data available here. The idea is to look for patterns that might give us clues as to what correlations we have with symptoms and lifestyle etc. I can make sure I dont capture PII data and that I dont retain data etc for GDPR or other privacy regulations. What do you all think of the idea? Any data scientists/analysts or researchers here, maybe we can collab?

If anyone has any suggestions for questions that would be wonderful!

  • I bought one for my brother who is a non LED/Dithering/Driver/insert other cause here, sufferer. He can literally watch any monitor or tv, has LED lights all over his house, uses Mac/PC/Android/iPhone all without issues. Just 1 month with the Nintendo DS he had sharp headaches from the device. He sold it the next month and he is fine now.

    • I can't believe this isn't being talked about more. We all know how the symptoms from monitors, tablets, mobile phones, and lighting can be debilitating, but we still don't know the long-term effects of these light sources. LED lights are everywhere, from malls to hospitals and schools.

What's worrying is that kids, who might not be able to express what they're feeling, could be sensitive to LED lights too. This is a big deal for our children, nieces, and nephews.

We need to discuss this more in our group and with other parenting groups to raise awareness about the potential risks to our kids' health and happiness.

      • Hi all just want to double check, does this mean that my dither is off?

        • Hi all, I am using a Huawei Nova 8i which does not have a LED backlit panel, however, the device does give me eyestrain with prolonged use.

I have noticed though, that when I use this phone in the car, or in my lounge which is brightly lit with sunlight from my windows my symptoms don't appear for a much longer time than if I was in a darker room with artificial light.

Just thought I would let you all know.

        • ryans Yeah, New dwarf had 2 seperate solutions for intel and M1 macs. I tried both and it seems the intel solution worked but the M1 had ambiguous results. I have now brute forced working on my M1 and today seems better. Reminder that on my M1 I have also reduced my resolution using betterdisplay, and did what Newdwarf recommended to disable dithering.

        • I have followed the instructions from @NewDwarf on how to disable dithering on my M1 mac. I didn't see much of an alleviation of symptoms. I have also reduced my resolution to 1600x900 using BetterDisplay, again with not much of an effect on my symptoms.

          Specs:

Interestingly, on my other Mac, I don't use BetterDisplay, but did follow @NewDwarf instructions to disable dithering, which helped me greatly. I can use this Mac, with pretty much no symptoms.

          Specs:

Just a note that on both Macs, I am using external LCD TFT backlit monitors.

I wonder if it is because the usable on is running Big Sur. And the unusable one is running Monterey?

          • Zazu Another update, I forced GPU rendering and also turned off HW overlays (in developer tools on android). It made the device usable for me. Not perfect but can use for an hour or so with no issues.

          • Zazu Update: I broke my old hauwei p smart 2019 and yesterday bought a Huawei nova 8i. I cant use this phone even though the display tech is TFT LCD panel (IPS). I am so gutted. Just wasted a ton of money here.

            • Hi everybody, here is my experience with the old Huawei 2019 P Smart. I have been using this phone for around 3 years now and in the beginning it gave be slight headache and eye strain, but, without having other options I continued using it. Today I can use this phone without much of an issue for at most an hour. I am not sure if I simply got used to it or not, but I rarely feel much of any symptom. I do have the screen set to warmer colours and my apps are and OS are set to dark mode all the time. Sadly my phone is nearing the end of its life, so the testing of new phones is in my future.

              Here are the specs https://www.phonearena.com/phones/Huawei-P-Smart-2019_id11057

Maybe try it out if they are still available in your region. All the best!

              • Zazu replied to this.
              • Hey there fellow LED strainers,

If you have been on this forum for a while, you would know that speaking to technology providers to take our health issues as a serious issue, is pretty much futile. I would recommend we change our strategy, to one that speaks to medical researchers/institutes, and motivate them to conduct research into the causes of our symptoms. My hope is that this would in turn, raise awareness of the issues we face within the medical community, but, also the general public.

If the research were to exist, with hard evidence that LEDs/dithering/technology does affect ours, and potentially many other members of the public who are clueless as to why they are experiencing symptoms. We would at least have a foundation of evidence to take to our technology providers.

The next step would be to share the evidence or even the plans for research with press/media and on our own individual social networks. I have considered a petition, but, I dont think this is the right tactic for this kind of thing, but, open to ideas here too.

Because we need to build a movement of people to do this. I am asking everyone interested to contact their local government, NGOs, foundations, and research institutes to consider looking into this. The more queries and ideas for research they get the better.

I have found possible avenues to explore in the US and the UK.

The National Institute for Health Research

The National Institute for Health Research (research ideas submissions)

                The American Brain Foundation

                The Neuroscience Foundation

                What do you all think?

I really think, that we need to start raising awareness of the issue with the medical community and the public. This is the only way we could encourage tech providers, to put features in place that would make their technology safer for us and everyone. I do strongly believe there are many, many more people suffering from these symptoms, that are completely unaware it is technology causing the issue. Of particular concern to me is that children, who cant describe what they are experiencing might be dealing with the same issues as us.

                • logixoul Thanks for the reply. Do you ahve a brand name for the dark brown clip-ons? I am also really interested in the supplements that you or others are taking to mitigate the strain. I take Magnesium and B complex, but havent found they make a difference. Perhaps I need to do a test with supps and without.

                  • I am really struggling with indoor lighting lately, whether it be at the gym, at restaurants and even shopping centres. Has anyone found relief through any means? Its a real problem. I get headaches from just 1 hour indoors, when LED lighting is used.

                    • ThaCMaster

I cannot game at all. Even on monitors and systems that are fine. I think my eyes struggle with the depth and perspective, esp. with shooters.
