degen M1 Macbook has the most intense multilayered dithering patterns I have ever seen (as visualized through an e-ink displayed).

Is it possible to take a video of this and potentially send it to Apple? Or even just upload it here?

If there is a test for it, and we can point and say this is the problem.

mike In 2-3 weeks i will get my iPhone 13 Pro, can’t wait.

Any luck with the iPhone 13 Pro and your patching?

Got it last week. But are waiting for a Zagg Glass XTR screen protector before I start using it, that will arrive in a couple of days.

      I will keep you posted.

Interesting.. notebookcheck says the 13 mini is 510.2 Hz pwm, while the pro is half that which is the # we are all used to seeing. Might be better for folks here to consider the non-pro version instead, if they have their hearts set on Apple.

I wish the color profile could be changed or weakened since the dithering over time is my nemesis. Never the less, that’s good to know.

Now I have used my iPhone 13 Pro for two days.

First I looked with both eyes, I could feel a little tension so I looked at the screen with one eye for half an hour. After that I look with both eyes without getting tension headache. I have done this procedure with 7-8 new screens. That’s what I need to do, thanks to all training. Yesterday I got 8+ hours of screen time, I can feel that in my eyes, but it’s not that bad. It’s to early to say, but I guess it’s like my iPhone 11 Pro for the eyes.

Just a note. I’ve been fine with my XS for years (only if I have reduce white point on 95%) and reduce motion, otherwise it’s unusable. I updated to iOS 15.01 the other other day and it became unusable with severe nausea. I looked through all settings and trialed various filters etc. nothing worked. Then I tried ‘differentiate without colour’. It does something I can’t put my eye on, but changes the colour profile v subtly and since then it’s usable again. If I uncheck it I get the nausea. May be worth people trying….

Out of curiosity, what iOS version were you on before you updated to 15.01? I noticed a change in eye strain when I updated from 14.6 to 14.8, so it seems something definitely changed at least around then.

That's interesting that "Differentiate without Color" seems to help you. From my understanding, that setting is for color-blind people, I'm curious if does change something that may help our symptoms. I'll try it and see if there are any positive changes.

bkdo I don’t know what I was on before and it wasn’t through iTunes so I can’t find out.

Yes do keep me updated if you find anything.

            Hi folks,

I just wanted to update with an iPhone 13 success story! As I detailed above, I purchased an iPhone 13 Pro and initially thought it was great. I used it continuously for a few days, and suddenly I had the same old spiralling migraines and nausea. Left eye pain, neck pain and all the trimmings. This got returned.

A couple of months later, and I decided to pick up an iPhone 13 (not Pro). This time:

            • I immediately put this matte screen protector on it
            • I started very gently - 10 mins at a time for a few days
            • I gradually built up my time on the phone over a week

I'm now 10 weeks in with this phone and I'm using it continuously without any issues at all. I can't believe it, I actually have less issues than with my iPhone 8 which I have tried to replace with both the SE and the 13 Pro previously.

As a side note I still can't play games on it - even 15 minutes seems to start giving me issues.

Could the tempered glass matt screen protector be making a difference? Or the lack of Pro Motion maybe - this phone is running at 60hz rather than 120hz? Seems strange, but this is the first OLED product I've ever been able to use.

Congrats on finding something that works, that's great news!

Out of curiosity, have you tried any of the following?

-Using the 13 without the protector to see if the symptoms come back

-Using the screen protector on a different problematic device to see if it prevents symptoms

-Trying different types of games to see if it affects the onset of symptoms (For example, a more graphics intensive game may cause worse symptoms)

-Messing with the brightness levels to see if it affects symptoms

You mentioned that you also tried a 13 Pro a while ago & had symptoms, I'd be curious if you'd now be able to use one if you had this screen protector on as well. The strange thing is that I don't really see anything special about this particular protector (Seems like a standard matte tempered glass protector from what I can see), I'm definitely interested as to what makes this one different.

si_edgey As a side note I still can't play games on it - even 15 minutes seems to start giving me issues.

By games do you mean games with a lot of movement (think Grand Theft Auto, or, racing game)? Or even a crossword puzzle or Scrabble kind of game, would give you symptoms?

I'm fine with the puzzle games but forget about GTA etc.

This is really good news, let us know more about it. For me I did not have any luck with screen protectors, tried some of them but eye strain was still there. Btw I'm more than happy to try and see if ip 13 works.

bkdo -Using the 13 without the protector to see if the symptoms come back

Definitely not - in my 11 years of this condition, I've learned that if it works….don't touch anything!

bkdo Using the screen protector on a different problematic device to see if it prevents symptoms

I plan on doing this and will report back, although I feel it's unlikely that the protector is doing anything special other than making the screen matte rather than glossy.

bkdo -Messing with the brightness levels to see if it affects symptoms

Brightness doesn't seem to affect me at all.

The problem is once I trigger problems, it can be days until I 'reset' back to a non-migraine state. It's just not worth it so I don't bother with games anymore. I haven't tested them extensively.

Yes I should clarify, I believe it's games with fast movement. I tried some drift and rally games but felt the familiar onset of symptoms an hour or so after playing for only 15 mins.

Puzzle games are fine. The weird thing is I used to be a games developer, but I've not even played a game in years now because of my issues.

I don't know why it works for me, but it does. It shouldn't….but it does. 😃

Have you ever tried a non-Pro 13 before this? I'd be surprised if the protector was the factor that makes it usable, but anything is possible. Though if you haven't tried one before, maybe it's just that the non-Pro models have a better flicker implementation than the Pros for your eyes? I've seen other people mention that they've had different experiences with the different models.

I know exactly what you mean, I hate that feeling too. Do you also have the thing where you feel like you can physically see the flicker from devices if you look for it? I get that sensation when I'm in that "migraine state".

si_edgey I don't know why it works for me, but it does. It shouldn't….but it does.

Well, whatever the reason, congrats on finding something that works 😄 If you do end up doing more testing with the protector, please do let us know your findings.

I helped a relative setup an 2021 Apple 10.2-inch iPad (Wi-Fi, 64GB) - Space Gray with iPad OS 15.5. This is the regular iPad offering so it's the A13 chip -- the latest you can buy as of this writing.

It is iPad 9th Generation with Model Number MK2K3LL/A A2602. Eyes felt better with True Tone disabled.

I used the device for about 2 hours and only got minor eyestrain and headache. I am not sure why but this device felt better than many other iPad generations I tried. The dizziness/anxiety I would get from even a glance at some devices, was only slightly present on this one. It is definitely not perfect and worse than my old Thinkpad.

But I am almost to the point I'd get one for myself and see if I could get used to it. Amazon is selling them for $299 USD.

When I looked in the mirror, I did see my pupils getting smaller and larger, over and over again. It wasn't a big difference but it did look odd. PWM maybe?

Any settings I should check before shipping it off to the relative?
