It can help, but it is very unlikely to fix it unless a specific weakness in the eye you now use predominately causes your problems. Most likely you have other issues when using your eyes together which can most likely only be improved by using them together.
I also cover my eyes to work on specific displays for now over 18 months and cannot see any improvements for my binocular vision.
However, hip and jaw alignment have an impact on my binocular vision, since I have an issue with vertical misalignment of my eyes. You can probably see this when you uncover your covered eye and if you "see" the second image comes in from above or below.
