Hi,
Last year after enjoying my Mac Mini + Dell U2414H for some time decided to break the bank and get a fully loaded iMac. I'm new to Mac but really enjoy the experience. This was a few months before the new retina models were released, and now looking at the Apple site it seems no Nvidia GPU's are used now - they are either Intel Iris or AMD.
Initially I thought it was just me getting used to the fonts+display on a mac (as it is very 'bright') but after some months noticed after extended use (3 hours +) started to feel dizzy and get headaches.
Went to my local Apple Store as I have extended AppleCare - they offered to replace the logic board and the panel. In the store the returned Mac looked a little better than before, but then bringing it home I can still see the 'flicker'. The best way to describe it is; think of white noise on an old CRT set - it is as if the image is being mixed in with white noise. The text on it just doesn't seem 'steady'.
I phoned the Apple Store a few days later and explained my problems. I've had the model under a year - but they said a refund cannot be offered. What are my rights as a consumer? I really want to stay with Apple but want to find a model (if any) which doesn't use PWM or have any noticeable flicker. As I have had this Mac for under a year, I paid over £2000 for it, and I am not happy with the product I have been sold - They should offer a replacement or a refund?
Moving on to the Nvidia card - I have read threads here which mention that by default Temporal Dithering is disabled on Nvidia cards. Obviously on OSX it is always on by default - as a little test I installed Windows 10 and had a play with the Nvidia Control Panel. I noticed there was a colour option (set to 6bit as default) - changed over to (8-10 bit i believe) and there was much less flicker but still too 'sharp' on the whites. I couldn't actually see a tick box to disable dithering..
Any advice, or should I start selling on eBay? 🙂
