ShivaWind Thanks! Can you confirm the Dasung is just a monitor and cannot be used as a standalone e-reader?
I was thinking of buying the Onyx because it can be used also independently and I had watched this video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6pw-oCItgx8

And also because it is cheaper :-)
But I have not made my mind up yet and what happened to my Android phone a few days ago makes me fear about the Onyx BOOX...

    AGI Someone mentioned input lag?

    • AGI replied to this.

Dasung is a monitor only, but it is very responsive. Lag would drive me up the wall.

ShivaWind Thanks. I just received an email back from them. I had not realized there is a third-generation HD version. They do not yet ship it outside China though and they do not encourage buying from third parties.
By the way, the price of the Pro is now USD 899 with free shipping, excluding custom fees, directly thru Dasung or Indiegogo. That makes it appealing. A month ago I discarded it as an option compared to the Onyx Boox because I had seen it on sale only on Amazon.com for USD 1199 plus USD 509 for shipping and custom fees. Unreasonable.

JTL Are you saying the input lag is worse for the BOOX?

          • JTL replied to this.

AGI Allegedly. If it does what I think it does, running a full OS with a glorified video streaming app for the GPU input I wouldn't be surprised if it caused input lag.

To quote from the YouTube comments

No, the review is not fair! Onyx has a input lag of about 300 ms, and Dasung practically does not have it. Therefore, as a second monitor, Dasung is better than Onyx! It
would be better if you connect both monitors to one computer and
duplicate the video signal on both, and then you can judge which monitor is
faster and whose input lag is less.

KM I read that the device doesn't have a "CE" sign and that no CE papers exist. Which due to European laws is required for any electronically device that gets imported to the EU. If they open the package at the border and don't find a CE sign or papers, they will either destroy it or send it back and you have to pay for it.

You may want to shoot them an email at contact@dasung.com
That is what they told me: "We have CE sign/mark,you can rest assured about this."

Does anyone know how to contact the author of "ditherig"? I don't think his tool supports external monitors, could it could.

            • JTL replied to this.

AGI I have two Dasung paperlike pro monitors and one Onyx Boox tablet. In terms of response, Dasung is better. There is almost no lag on Dasung monitor when you change from screen to screen or refresh websites. You can even watch youtube videos on Dasung monitor, but there is no color. It will be the best if there is a HDMI 2.0 port on your laptop to use Dasung. Otherwise you will need a converter which may not give you full performance.

Boox tablet has noticeable lag when the screen is refreshed, but I have not tried to use it as a monitor. Not sure if the performance is better when used as a monitor. I like the tablet because it makes things easier for travel. Going thru airport security check is a pain when you have a laptop and a monitor with you.

I am also thinking about getting a yotaphone you mentioned in your other posts. It is pretty expensive on ebay (~$800).

I intend to connect to the Dasung the laptop I was given at work. It is a MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014). I had never used a Mac before and I wonder...is Belkin 4K Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable what I need?

Are you thinking of buying Yotaphone 2 or 3? I contacted Yotaphone via the form on their website a few times to know more about the best channels to buy but never heard back...

"No promises but I might have something similar for AMD graphics under Windows/OSX/Linux in the future. I've been busy but be rest assured I'm still working on it 😉"

This makes me very excited. Let us know if crowdsourcing some cash would help for prototyping and testing time.

I have never used Mac either. So I don't have the answer to your question.

I want to get a yotaphone 3, but a yotaphone 2 in good condition is also fine. Yotaphone is available on Ebay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/new-Yota-3-YotaPhone-3-64GB-Unlocked-Android-7-1-1-Mobile-cellphone-Ch-Versio-/163000905485?_trksid=p2385738.m4383.l4275.c10

I think you might have some issues given intel GPU dithering and how the Dasung makes it visible. but I believe this is the right cable.

Aaaaarghhhhh, really? I wish my eyes were not so strained and I could go thru all the dithering-related posts on this site...I glanced on a thread where you, if I recall, show that for Nvidia cards it is possible to switch dithering off. Is that a feature only of a limited number of cards? Or not all computers use dithering? I use shared facilities and hence shared PCs. In my previous job I checked and all the monitors which I could tolerate were connected to PCs with non-Intel graphic cards. Coincidence?

Thanks on the cable. Maybe it is not a bad idea to hear what Dasung has to comment on the likelihood of dithering...are not those our potential saviors? I trust they are among the few to be interested in hearing about our pain, not certainly Google or Intel.

It has no effect in some 9xx and all 10xx cards.

To be honest with you. I'm not sure if the dithering option under Linux ever did anything since I remember using older Nvidia cards just fine under Windows without needing to change anything.

AGI I checked and all the monitors which I could tolerate were connected to PCs with non-Intel graphic cards. Coincidence?

                        Not a coincidence.

Thanks. After what happened between me and Android two weeks ago I am skeptic about being able to use the AMOLED side (which may also be employing PWM), so I do not see the point of investing 800 bucks for half phone :-(
Unfortunately Yotaphone 2 was on sale for USD 100 a couple of months ago and is now out of stock. That I would have considered buying at that price.
I hope someone will soon come up with a full e-ink phone at a reasonable price.

AGI yeah, agree. 800 bucks is a high price. I will just use the e-ink side of the phone.

Gurm i think it's like 'dither-rig' i.e. the thing you use to control your dithering

Laptops probably used dithering for many years? Why is it suddenly a problem and only on new models for some people?
