Did anyone's discomfort start with HDR or extended color ranges?

My journey downhill started with the LG CX OLED and has now extended to other displays including newer iPhones and iPads. The one constant I can find is that these devices use color ranges being 8-bit. Any newer TV has to keep up so it accepts 10 bit signals. Whether they are using FRC to accomplish this or a LUT (preferable), it depends on the manufacturer. I'm trying to gauge if anyone else had issues around the same timeframe when HDR became mainstream.

Side note: Eizo Flexscan panels (expensive yes) accept 10 bit but use a LUT on an 8 bit panel. No FRC. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these.

I don't know for sure, but I definitely think extended color ranges are a huge factor for me. I've specifically had issues with newer iPads and iPhones that don't have PWM, and recently noticed that iOS 14.8 has started causing symptoms. The fact that the problems appeared with a software update suggests to me that it's something like you mentioned.

bkdo This seems quite familiar. I don't know when the change was made in IOS since I went from 14.7 straight to 15, but if the color change started in 14.8, I'm glad I held off. These panels are ALL 8 bit panels, but want to output the P3 color range (iDevices) which is beyond sRGB. The only way I can think of accomplishing this is by dithering over time.

I am told that the LG OLED TVs are true 10 bit panels. If this is true and they are only trying to output 10 bit color, I don't know why I can't watch their displays without feeling overwhelmed. I have read that they take in 12 bit or higher color. I don't know how they handle these higher color ranges though. Maybe they are dithering those…. Not sure.

I turned off extended color range on my old LG LCD television. I despise all of these tricks to try and pull off a supposed better image.
