bz12 Not perfect, but usable, is exactly what I have experienced with that tablet.

@"degen" so you don't have eyestrain with the A8? This is interesting. Your situation seems similar to mine, so maybe I should try it?

Yeah, I bought the Galaxy Tab S8 2022 and my eyes are bloodshot after a few hours of using it, so it is going back.

We will never solve this issue if it is completely individual how each person's eyes get irritated by each device.

I still have the Lenovo x280 that I can use 10h a day without any discomfort or patching. It does not cause any discomfort it it's own display or when connected to HP LCD display that does not have PWM.

All other displays that I have currently, require me to put tape on my right eyeglass to not cause bloodshot eyes.

Maxx We will never solve this issue if it is completely individual how each person's eyes get irritated by each device.

I consider the problem there is quantifying what exactly is different between display panels and potential other factors like alleged GPU or software rendering issues and how that contributes to eyestrain is a problem of itself.

As I wrote recently in another thread about investigations into alleged temporal dithering/GPU rendering issues between drivers.

[Sometime] in the past someone complained on the Intel forums that allegedly a model of laptop with one version of the driver did not cause eyestrain while a newer version did. And Intel (IMO) used a flawed methodology because they sent two identical laptops that supposedly only differed by the driver version to a testing lab which measured for PWM, blue light and other "obvious" factors and when there was no difference they closed the case on their end. It's easy to get upset at this but what I think the issue is trying to engage with development of any solution is without a clear "cause and effect" relationship there are many different things that cause the vague description of "eyestrain" and unless someone at these tech companies is REALLY bored or personally experiences the issue, don't expect to be investigated and solved by them.

Not sure I linked this before, but if this review unit has the same panel as yours Notebookcheck tested they tested several brightness and color properties of the display as compared to others. Not sure how relevant that is towards whatever causes your issue.

degen If you can remember it, how do you think the A8 compares to the OnePlus 3 with Paranoid Android 7.3.1? Are there brightness issues?

What I'm kinda inferring here is that maybe the a8 is not strain free for others who have similar situation like me, maybe it is just that they have not used it enough and realized that it does cause eye strain

For me the eye strain is always completely logical without any placebo type of effects.

A device either causes strain or does not. Thoug with some devices it might take 2 days to notice it. I might need to use a device 8h per day on 2 consecutive days to feel it really, but I always feel it.

Lenovo x280 I can use 10h a day 5 days a week without any strain and that is now the only device I can use without covering my other eye

KM yes, it has the White LED brightness issue, which as of course you know, means needing to reduce the brightness to minimum (which is thankfully quite low), and feeling some irritation over time.

Maxx it is not an ideal device. But compared to another recent Samsung device with an LCD display without PWM (Galaxy A32 5G), it is better. I want to temper expectations for sure, it is not a wonder device.

I have amplified this device only because I feel the ideal device is not in production currently. Also, it is reasonably priced.

An aside, but QD-OLED is promising technology. I had considered buying a QD display from Gigabyte, but how about this Alienware QD-OLED display? It appears to “just” have refresh rate flicker and needs testing by us as to its usability.

Maxx I’m digging up an old post. Sorry. Did you buy the regular S8 or the plus or ultra? I ask because I believe the panels are different.

The tab s8 has a lcd tft screen, you have to try the s8 ultra which has a AMOLED screen

Clokwork hello, little late here, I am a avid samsung user that came from using ipads back in 2010's when there were absolutely no symtoms. Right now I do currently own and use the s8 ultra, with a matte screen cover, and I do have to say it is the only device in my home that is soooo boring because of its non-existent brain twidling. Unlike my ipad 12.9 5th gen (the only device i cant like at all use) , or other devices (s22 6.1, apple etc.), this device has no stimulus at all!. When I first bought it(six months after launch) Sometimes the rare "android stutter" was horrendously annoying, but after an update to the current os, it has dissapeared 100%. Also, i found that the extreme size (not unwealdy and heavy though, much better for shitting and watching with one hand than 12.9ipad) made it so that without matte-light-dispersing-screen protectors, the light matter bounced off is intense and large, so unlike my s22 which is small and therefore my body blocks most large light emitting origin points from reflecting off, this device sure needs a matte screen protector if you are at least quite sensitive to any light. I used the 128gb cheapest non cellular model sold in south korea. Hope I can help you with this knowledge. (My settings: natural color(must for all samsung phones for better colors), fast refresh rate also must for no headaches, slower animations in developer mode if you are really the tricky bunch (like me).) Please be safe and use better devices!!

EDIT: *please this is only my experience with the s8 ultra tablet if u have ANY symtoms over any device, you're body is letting you know that what you are doing is damaging and unsustainable towards you're overall health, please stop when you START to feel weasy, or otherwise. Take care.

Hansolo apologies for asking, but when you say boring, are you saying that in a bad way or a good way? I couldn’t really tell if you like it or not 😅

Clokwork hey clokwork, again, sorry for the late reply, I just updated my samsung and i just can't seem to be able to make it okay even after several resets(hard). I would reccomend a rlcd or another form of display technology if you want about 85~100% assurance of it being suitable for your eyes. I think even though i haven't used an rlcd tablet, I am 100% sure it will be times and times better than self emitting technologies. Even with software hurdles(like dithering and sowhat), I believe correct brightness and reflecting will undoubtly at-least improve your pain. So i pre-ordered a eyemoo tablet with a pen and its on extra-sale for until today! Check it out on kickstarter type "eyemoo" or "rlcd". Sorry for late reply.. as for my tab ultra.. will be selling it after I leave a review of the eyemoo rlcd on ledstrain. I will contact you shortly (a month perhaps)about my tablet experience and maybe buy a ociloscope to show you the pwm.

I suffer with all Samsung phone devices. For my suprise the company gave me a S7 and I had ZERO problems. I can't tell if theS8 would be the same

                  a year later

FSO got an s7 because of this reply, when I first got it my eyes were still hurting from it and I was planning to return it but I forgot to do it in time, so I just kept it, using it for like an hour at a time, but now I can use it for a few hours…same thing with marvel rivals, when I 1st played it my eyes were blood shot, but now I can play it for about 2 hours no problem l.. I think there is a adjustment period for new devices.
