I went to return an item today and looked at a few devices to gauge what I am capable getting should my devices fail anytime soon. the iPad Pro 12.9 really makes me feel terrible. It's extremely noticeable. I then went to the Surface Pro 8 and I created a thread about that earlier. While it felt well, better, I wasn't excited about it. To my surprise, I passed the Galaxy Tab S8 plus and ultra and while they colors are saturated, I was able to stare at the screen without any immediate symptoms. I was and still am shocked. its an AMOLED panel vs OLED if that makes any difference whatsoever. The regular S8 is an LCD I believe. I won't jump to any conclusions just yet, but maybe Samsung is on to something with their color handling, flicker, and/or whatever else it is that causes me harm (with these specific devices). I feel its worth a try for anyone who hasn't viewed them to find them in store and see how you feel. I know it won't help everyone as we all may fit into different categories but thought I'd share.

Clokwork I recently bought the tab a8 2022 version, I have completely replaced my laptop with it, next I will buy the 14 inch tab s8 hopefully it will be just as good as the A8

Update: I bought a Samsung s7 fe, no good returning it some time this week, going to buy the s7 plus or s8 since they use AMOLED displays and my phone currently uses that and I have no issues

degen yes, i saw you bought it, but yes if I have eye strain from my other computers as soon as I start using the A8 I can feel my eye feeling better.

Going to try the s8 next, it has a super AMOLED display

Im using the Samsung galaxy tab s4 amoled with no strain. But Samsung galaxy tab s6 amoled induced strain so I had to swap it.

degen I bought one as well after reading this thread. It's not perfect for me but it's usable. Even more so than my phone. Any specific settings or screen protectors that you think contributes?

bz12 I have mine in dark mode and adaptive brightness. Also when I just got it I could only use it for about 3hr since my eyes were already strained but now I use it all day, about 10hrs a day

bz12 Not perfect, but usable, is exactly what I have experienced with that tablet.

Yeah, I bought the Galaxy Tab S8 2022 and my eyes are bloodshot after a few hours of using it, so it is going back.

We will never solve this issue if it is completely individual how each person's eyes get irritated by each device.

I still have the Lenovo x280 that I can use 10h a day without any discomfort or patching. It does not cause any discomfort it it's own display or when connected to HP LCD display that does not have PWM.

All other displays that I have currently, require me to put tape on my right eyeglass to not cause bloodshot eyes.

I consider the problem there is quantifying what exactly is different between display panels and potential other factors like alleged GPU or software rendering issues and how that contributes to eyestrain is a problem of itself.

As I wrote recently in another thread about investigations into alleged temporal dithering/GPU rendering issues between drivers.

[Sometime] in the past someone complained on the Intel forums that allegedly a model of laptop with one version of the driver did not cause eyestrain while a newer version did. And Intel (IMO) used a flawed methodology because they sent two identical laptops that supposedly only differed by the driver version to a testing lab which measured for PWM, blue light and other "obvious" factors and when there was no difference they closed the case on their end. It's easy to get upset at this but what I think the issue is trying to engage with development of any solution is without a clear "cause and effect" relationship there are many different things that cause the vague description of "eyestrain" and unless someone at these tech companies is REALLY bored or personally experiences the issue, don't expect to be investigated and solved by them.

Not sure I linked this before, but if this review unit has the same panel as yours Notebookcheck tested they tested several brightness and color properties of the display as compared to others. Not sure how relevant that is towards whatever causes your issue.

KM yes, it has the White LED brightness issue, which as of course you know, means needing to reduce the brightness to minimum (which is thankfully quite low), and feeling some irritation over time.

What I'm kinda inferring here is that maybe the a8 is not strain free for others who have similar situation like me, maybe it is just that they have not used it enough and realized that it does cause eye strain

For me the eye strain is always completely logical without any placebo type of effects.

A device either causes strain or does not. Thoug with some devices it might take 2 days to notice it. I might need to use a device 8h per day on 2 consecutive days to feel it really, but I always feel it.

Lenovo x280 I can use 10h a day 5 days a week without any strain and that is now the only device I can use without covering my other eye

Maxx it is not an ideal device. But compared to another recent Samsung device with an LCD display without PWM (Galaxy A32 5G), it is better. I want to temper expectations for sure, it is not a wonder device.

I have amplified this device only because I feel the ideal device is not in production currently. Also, it is reasonably priced.

An aside, but QD-OLED is promising technology. I had considered buying a QD display from Gigabyte, but how about this Alienware QD-OLED display? It appears to “just” have refresh rate flicker and needs testing by us as to its usability.
