So my karate studio has switched to LED can lights in the waiting area, and for our new mat space they put in overhead fluorescent-panel-replacement-LED's. These are the same size as a fluorescent panel - 2' by 4' - only instead of having fluorescent bulbs above them it's a 1" thick LED panel. The light from them is ... ghastly. They aren't too bright to look at, and you can actually see them cycling in a weird pattern that looks almost like a fluorescent bulb.
It didn't immediately hurt my eyes, but today they are VERY tired. I will have to rule out other factors - my eyes were already pretty strained when I got there, and frankly if they were VERY bad I'd have been destroyed by them in the first 5-10 minutes. I did a full hour-long workout with no problem. And I'm exhausted lately ANYWAY, regardless of that exposure. But it's still a depressing development.
Too many variables - I also wore my contacts, and due to the construction there's a lot of dry dusty air there as well. So I think I need to give it more time, but it was a real bummer. I asked them not to but I guess the people doing the construction were driven by "long term maintenance costs" which are much lower.
