artcher1999 I returned the poco x4 GT, had slight headaches and eye strain, maybe due to the flickering as shown in the post above? Not sure. I might have gotten used to it over time I guess, but I do not really do mobile gaming and the price seemed far too high.

I am now trying the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G and I while not perfect ( I get a weird dizziness) it is really usable. Might settle on this even though the camera is abysmal.

Edit: I eventually sent back the one plus as well. Got back to an iPhone 8 Plus. The design is really outdated, but the pictures are still decent, iOS is great and the screen is beautiful and does not give me any funny feelings

I have used P20 in the past and was quite a compact and good working phone. I see some users complaining about eye strain with it and possible due to dithering because that should be PWM free. So I am tempted to give it another try. I remember using Nova 5T which should also have a PWM free display without any major issues. But I did have eye strain and maybe now that I think about it, could be because of other features of the software.

For the users who used Moto G100 @Maxx or others, how bad is the PWM under 65% brightness? Because I find that value to be quite big, especially if I want to use the phone in dim light at night for reading a book. How is the size? Manageable or feels way too big to carry in pocket? Thank you.

ban You'll have better luck with a cheap Samsung phone with PLS LCD screen(60 Hz).

Smartphone that I can use. I look from notebookcheck and devices have to have 0 pwm, screen hd+ and contrast ratio have to be under 1000 (this is very important!) I have tried phones with no PWM and contrast is around 1500. It's untolerable to watch even 30 seconds. Indoors brightness level at zero. They are not expensive ones. 149-199€. If you want high specks then you have to suffer a little bit.

Do you have any tips? Because I couldn't find anything usable on the market...unfortunately...

ban Moto G100 was fine for me before this February. Now I cannot tolerate it. My eyes just went broken in a short period of time where I was using Twitter a lot with my phone. Now I cannot even tolerate any TV's that previously were fine.

The only device I can use is Lenovo X280 with it's own screen or connected to HP external LCD.

I don't know why it is, because if I connect a desktop or another more modern laptop to that screen, my eyes get red and strained in a few hours.

So - I'd be actually cautious about the Motorola G100 - maybe it "caused" my eyes to "malfunction".

Some new (apparently) PWM flicker free handsets I'm keen to try:

Nokia G60 - 120hz LCD display, with a snapdragon 695. Stock android experience, so keen to see if the screen is also tolerable. Some YouTube reviews have mentioned the screen is very nice and accurate. In my region, it only comes with 4GB ram, but it has a headphone jack! Though the bezels look ugly.

Honor x8 5g - A 720p TFT LCD sceen (old tech) - this seems promising, but it's rocking a low end snapdragon 480+ chipset, and android 11, though it also has a headphone jack and a 90hz screen. Hardly any youtube reviews, but from the one's I have seen, the screen looks drab and bland (which could be a blessing?).

If anyone has tried either of these two, it would be great to hear some feedback.

How come you returned the Oneplus Ce 2 lite 5g?

Did the screen not resonate with you in the end?

          Vividblu99 Two reasons:

          1. I had a funny feeling, sort of a numbness, (kind of like smoking a light joint), after using it. It is really not as bad as the iphone 11, nor as bad as an oled screen, eg asus zenfone 9, but still not great, I suppose I could have gotten used to it over time? But..
          2. Iphone 8 plus is still a superior phone imo. Better camera, better form factor when handling, better screen, better OS. Yes, the design is outdated, yes the battery sucks in comparison, yes it is 5 years old. Still prefer it 🙂 But this is very personal.

I wish apple made another phone with this beautiful screen. I would buy a couple of them just to stock up for the future lol

I just recently upgraded from my Xperia XZ1 to a Xperia 1 IV and even though its an OLED display its PWM 480.5hz where as the Xperia 1 II i have that still sits unused in its box had 240hz and was very bad on my eyes. I also tried a Xiaomi Redmi Note 11 Pro which has 521.5 Hz PWM AMOLED screen but that also as bad for my eyes. The Xperia 1 IV screen just seems extra clear and relaxed to look at despite still having a PWM of 480.5hz.

Lg g7 seems pretty good, thanks for the tip! Doesnt seem to do volte though, so calls are dicey. [LG7 not good after a while- avoid]

As I only found my Xperia X compact totally comfortable in the past 5 years, I bought another one on AliExpress : it's completely unusable.

Here are a couple of pics : I used the exact same "white background" pic on Google. On the left, you can see mine, and the new one on the right. Same brightness, same RGB settings (0-0-0), same display settings.

The new one is silky, yellowish, and gives eyestrain in a few seconds. It's typically the problem I have with new screens, I feel like I can't focus well on them, and they seem naturally more yellowish. Could it be related to the technology used by such backlit LEDs ? I think so

I have the same problem with HTC U11, I tried 2 other ones, checked them with oscilloscope, identical response, identicat ROM and settings, both unusuable

SAH It most likely a knock off screen from China, i had the same problem with my Xperia XZ1's, bought two more as backups from Ebay, but they came with a knock off Chinese screens, i bought OEM replacement screens and installed it and both of the phones were usable just like the one i bought near launch. Buying new/refurbished previous generation phone on ebay/aliexpress now a days is almost guaranteed to come with a knock off screen since most of the listings marked as new are actually refurbished and the sellers in China even repackage the boxes.

Rataplan otherwise I'll go for the Fairphone 4.

Are you still on the Fairphone? How is it eyestrain wise and as a general smartphone?

              • SAH replied to this.

Honor will launch a new X40 variant (X40 GT) in china...and looks like it will have an Lcd screen + SD 888.

Basically an X9 But with an better soc.

Hope it will launch globaly someday. Looks good.

                Sorry bad english.

Jack Where did you buy the OEM replacement screens ? Is there an official spare parts website from Sony ?

I opened the new phone : chinese handwriting, half broken screws, missing screws. It's totally refurbished, even if they pretended it was new. I swapped the screens and at least I have a usable phone now, with better battery and everything that was broken before works now.

ryans Rataplan answered me this about Fairphone 4 when I asked if he used it : "A couple of days. I returned it as it wasn't as comfortable to the eyes as my Nokia 7.2." I tried it myself and it wasn't good (5/10 or 6/10 comfort level). Some were luckier in the forum

Pixel 7 is ordered. I'll report back with my findings. Pixels are usually usable with essentially no discomfort for me, but they do use pwm.
