I've been following this thread for a while now so here is my take:
From a lot of research on the topic I can conclude there is no one solution for our problems but definitely reducing screen time is most helpful.
I've been using an OLED phone for 3 years without issue! Its a Xiaomi Mi9. Before purchasing it I had problems with the previous model (Mi8) and many Samsungs. Back in 2019 Xiaomi made big fuss for adding a DC dimming feature to their flagship phones and it does make a difference. With it applied I can use the phone for many hours at a time. That's having in mind that without it it has typical level of flickering according to notebookcheck test.
Now here is the tricky part:
Newer Xiaomi phones don't work for me even with DC dimming turned on, it seems that they made real effort into solving the issue only when there was strong hype around it and ever since they just make it as a gimmick rather than actual functionality. Because the phone is older now I have been looking for a new one for the past year and newer models expectedly OLED phones are a NO GO for me but more interestingly some LCD also are!
Here is what I've tried so far (only the highlights, there are more):
Xiaomi 10T - not good even as its LCD, can use for short time only
Xiaomi 11T - worse than the 10T
Motorola Edge 20 - good initially but after a while consistent burn in the eyes, even with DC dimming on
Realme GT Master Edition - absolute hell
Galaxy S21 Ultra - ok at first but not good
I also tried some iPhones:
iPhone 7 Plus - no strain at all but the Mi9 is better in every way except OS support
iPhone XR - it was strange at first but its perfectly fine. Problem is the smaller resolution PPI and maybe the Face ID. I could use it for many hours with attention features off. I also tried it with a matte screen protector - it really helped me but with the low PPI the screen looks like my old CRT TV.
Hope this info helps someone.
