Humans are able to perceive CRT flicker (and flicker in general, be it single strobe from CRT's or multi strobe such as PWM dimming) very easily, especially till 75hz, which is the cutoff.
What you've experienced on the phones you've mentioned is called PWM, which is a form of strobing used to modulate brightness in smartphones.
The only way to avoid this is to opt for a modern LCD smartphone (the list above by Vividblu is quite decent), as all OLEDs inherently suffer from this design flaw. This is not fixable through a software update. The panel itself implements how brightness dimming is done, so it'll take a few years till OLED becomes usable for people more sensitive to PWM.

i have exactly the same issue. In my experience until 2020 I only had problems with my eyes. From 2020 my eye problem disappeared and I got headaches/dizziness from screens. I have tested 20+ screens, also some before 2020…and I dont believe the PWM theory. I think the manufacturers installed a "trick" by software to compete on the most "in your face screen". Most vivid colors, etc.

I think there is no other option to wait until a new wave of phones comes out, and maybe they are ok, for which reason it may be.

I've had good luck with Sony phones the colors on these phones are very natural, I used an Xperia XZ1 which has no PWM after 25% brightness and at 24% brightness and below the PWM is 2358Hz which i found tolerable. I upgraded to an Xperia 1 IV in September 2022 which has an OLED screen and 500hz PWM but doesnt bother me. I cant use Xiaomi phones their color profiles really are just bad on my eyes and i never liked the way the colors looked on those phones either.

Vividblu99 Its a mild dizziness but it gets stronger and stronger and by the end of the day if I used too much this Realme x50 5g, I feel super mega dizzy.

I've been playing around with the smallest width settings again in developer mode. If I set this between 475 - 500, the text and icons/images all shrink, but also become a lot more clearer and comfy.

I've tried this on a number of lcd phones, and it seems to be helping me further. Might not work for everyone, especially if you have hyperopia. But it's worth a try.

I always assumed smaller text/icons would cause more strain. This doesn't' seem to be the case with me, surprisingly.

richiesuk Yes very interesting because it is with the Dimensity 8200-Ultra, DDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 way more powerful than my Realme 9 Pro. When it arrives like his predecessor as Poco X4 GT here i will try it. But with the X4 GT i had no luck and there Xiaomi was also speaking of a LCD display with DC Dimming.

Thank you, so it is not so good.

I was considering Motorola G73 5G, but I'm not sure for the low brightness level of the display.

I was also considering to buy Realme 9 5G, waiting for the release of a better usable smartphone.

Dok123 I tried the G73 5G. Couldn't tolerate the display. Instant eye strain.

Realme 9 5G is a cheap & safe bet. But yes, it's underpowered, but it'll do a decent job for casual browsing/surfing the net, social media/youtube etc.

It seems the x50 5g is definitely not the phone for you.

Well I was about to order nord n30 same as ce 3 lite but since people are saying it's no good guess I'll wait. My moto edge 2021 ips display has been giving me issues lately. No pwm above 60 percent. I'm in us. My lg v20 and v40 never caused issues but I was forced to upgrade with sprint and got pixel 6 pro and then s21 plus and started having issues. The POS modem in this moto phone is also an issue so I have to get something else.

I've now used Honor Magic 5 Pro for a few months. Really heavy usage, like when the battery dies during the day, or is like 15% in the evening, I find my eyes irritated in the next morning, but normal usage of consuming 50% the battery does not irritate.
