Magic4 Lite 5G - full 24 hour use review:

Matte screen protector applied (brand - celicious)

Comfort: 9/10 - Set on the 'Normal' color mode - with the color temperature towards yellow -

The screen is proving to be quite ideal, & on par with the Realme 9 pro & Realme x50 5g.

The low contrast display, coupled with the subtle non offensive backlighting has been a joy to use.. So far.

The panel feels very reminiscent to that of the Honor View 20 from 2019.

The anti glare/matte protector works perfectly, especially when lowering the screen brightness to anywhere under 20%, in dark mode.

It's still on Android 11 - with a March 2023 security patch. I have no intention of updating it, as I'm enjoying the current text rendering settings, and I don't want this to change.

I'm going to be using it as my daily driver for the next few weeks. But so far, I'm definitely impressed. Wish I would have got myself one sooner (instead of playing around with display models & an associates unit, and then dismissing it?!?! 🤦‍♂️).

Vividblu99 Hi great. Do you think that the 4g version is the same?

Another info, is it possible in pro mode of camera settings, set the exposition for example 1/4000 and the ISO and make slow motion video (how many fps)?

Vividblu99 I am trying a Realme x50 5g and I don't notice too much eye strain buy it makes me dizzy, hope to find someday a phone as comfortable to watch as my dead Sony T2 ultra.

Vividblu99 Good to hear. But i have read that Honor not says how long it will get updates. So i don‘t think it will get longer security updates than the Realme 9 Pro. So not worth to try it for me.

It seems that Xiaomi will launch the Redmi 12 with a 6,79 inch LCD Display with FHD+ resolution and 90 Hz for 199€. Maybe interesting when Xiaomi will provide security updates until 2027.

The 4G model has an identical design to the 5G, only the chipset & camera set up are different. Also the 4g model is missing some sensors (gyro).

Just checked the pro mode/camera - there is an "s" mode set to a default of 1/11, and using the slider this can be set to 1/4000. ISO range 100 to 6400.

There is no slow motion video recording :/

The Magic 4 Lite 5G is also known as the Honor X9 5G/Honor X30, depending on your region. Slow mo video recording may be available depending on the variant. It's not on my model though.

I've used some benchmarking apps, and they've displayed my model name as the - ANY NX1 - this is coming up as the Honor X9 5G.

Are you using a matte screen protector? If not, maybe consider applying one and then setting the screen refresh rate to 60hz only. See if that makes a difference to the dizziness.

Honor are awful when it comes to software and security updates. A year after release, and the magic4 lite is still on Android 11.

If you're looking for long term software support, Honor is definitely NOT the brand!

Although, from what I've read online, it seems there are issues with the newer android versions, from problems with text rendering/dithering, all the way through to VPN's not working with mobile data, and VPN's being bypassed by Google.

Also, android 12/13 break the capacity to fully make use of screen overlay filters. For example, the color calibrator app doesn't work on the most recent versions of android on some UI's - even after trying some adb commands.

This is bad news, as these types of screen filtering apps can act as an important aid & support to some people with eye strain/display sensitivity issues.

Android will eventually head in the same direction as Apple's iOS, as there is news of android disabling apk side loading, and even omitting the use of VPN's all together. 😐

My story is the following:

My eyes generally light sensitive and in the past I could easily notice if a crt monitor was run by 60Hz, ppl thought I am a weirdo

85-100Hz was ok for me

Since using mobiles I had no issues with LCD. Screens.

I have a huawei p20pro which has 238 pwm, and it makesy eyes tired by end of the day a bit.l and also it's an ancient device and wanted to upgrade.

I had no issues with iPhone 11 iPhone 12 mini btw.

My wife bought a iphone 14pro and after 5 salec I felt dizzy and my eyes were really strange, never felt this before.

Also I had honor magic 50 pro for 2 hrs and I had the same feeling. Packed and sent it back straight away. Never mind they super eye friendly screen, 2160hz pwm, etc . Didn't work for me. Could it be because LTPO?

richiesuk No, you are not weird!
Humans are able to perceive CRT flicker (and flicker in general, be it single strobe from CRT's or multi strobe such as PWM dimming) very easily, especially till 75hz, which is the cutoff.
What you've experienced on the phones you've mentioned is called PWM, which is a form of strobing used to modulate brightness in smartphones.
The only way to avoid this is to opt for a modern LCD smartphone (the list above by Vividblu is quite decent), as all OLEDs inherently suffer from this design flaw. This is not fixable through a software update. The panel itself implements how brightness dimming is done, so it'll take a few years till OLED becomes usable for people more sensitive to PWM.

i have exactly the same issue. In my experience until 2020 I only had problems with my eyes. From 2020 my eye problem disappeared and I got headaches/dizziness from screens. I have tested 20+ screens, also some before 2020…and I dont believe the PWM theory. I think the manufacturers installed a "trick" by software to compete on the most "in your face screen". Most vivid colors, etc.

I think there is no other option to wait until a new wave of phones comes out, and maybe they are ok, for which reason it may be.

richiesuk I've tried amoleds with DC dimming.

Didn't make much of a difference for me.

I've had good luck with Sony phones the colors on these phones are very natural, I used an Xperia XZ1 which has no PWM after 25% brightness and at 24% brightness and below the PWM is 2358Hz which i found tolerable. I upgraded to an Xperia 1 IV in September 2022 which has an OLED screen and 500hz PWM but doesnt bother me. I cant use Xiaomi phones their color profiles really are just bad on my eyes and i never liked the way the colors looked on those phones either.

Vividblu99 Its a mild dizziness but it gets stronger and stronger and by the end of the day if I used too much this Realme x50 5g, I feel super mega dizzy.

I've been playing around with the smallest width settings again in developer mode. If I set this between 475 - 500, the text and icons/images all shrink, but also become a lot more clearer and comfy.

I've tried this on a number of lcd phones, and it seems to be helping me further. Might not work for everyone, especially if you have hyperopia. But it's worth a try.

I always assumed smaller text/icons would cause more strain. This doesn't' seem to be the case with me, surprisingly.
