Usable Smartphones?

iOS eye strain caught up to me over time. I wonder if I could install iOS 10 on here...

Update on the Pixel 3aXL. In summary, it seems good for very short periods of use only, which for me this means less than a hour per day and obviously not in one sitting. The last two days this was the case for me and it seemed like a keeper.

However, I am often on the road so i rely on the phone for emails and calendar. Today with more than 3 hours of use i got a nasty headache and serious eye strain. I cannot tolerate this as i am often outside of the office, so i cant keep the phone.

Gurm When you say the 7+ is tolerable, does this mean you can look at the screen 3-4 hours a day without eyestrain?

Peter It means I can check my mail, send text messages, do a little light web browsing. I don't know for how long, honestly. I haven't really stress tested. Skinomi matte protector helps, too.

Gurm @Peter This my impression as well. It is tolerable. If you get feeling comfy with it and say, hey, this isn't so bad, and spend a good amount of time on it, it will catch up with you.

Gurm it's true and it's the weirdest thing about those MatteSkin Skinomi protectors but they do in fact increase the time before eyestrain kicks in

Kind of irked I can't drop the 7+ back to iOS12, since iOS13 seems to have introduced some fuckery... should have had my wife make a backup a while ago. Grrrrrr.

Gonna check out the Pixel 3a though. They're on sale for Black Friday, so it's a good time to shop.

Gurm Great, lets see how it goes. I recommend that you install the app Oled Saver and test the Pixel with the app running. Personally i find the display is becoming softer.

Peter Yeah, I'm not really thrilled with the way I'm reacting to prolonged iPhone exposure, it definitely tires me out. If I can get used to the Pixel, that'll be a great day.

Gurm I came to the conclusion that I cannot use any Apple products anymore. My wife has an iPhone 7 now which seems okish but I get some nausea after some time. Her Apple Watch is the same, Apple TV as well.
Maybe they use the same dithering algorithm for all devices?

Currently I can use an Ubuntu Laptop at work with LED screen without issues ( even running Firefox ) and Windows 10 at home. Both systems are connected through DisplayPort to the integrated Intel GPU.

The Pixel 3a is not perfect either but I can use it longer than any iPhone I used before.

Gurm it’s cumulative which is the problem. iPhone eye stain while mild at first doesn’t seem to reset quickly and then next time you get just a bit more strained until eventually it’s a big problem

degen Same experience with the Pixel. If i keep using it within the day, even in short bursts, in the evening i have a disturbing headache.

I recently upgraded from a samsung galaxy s8+ to a samsung note 10. For the first week or two the note 10 caused some discomfort but now I can use it without issue.

SeniorTaquito How is the setup of the Note 10, i.e. any blue filter app, brightness level, etc.

I feel the need to clarify the "without issue" part. I also can use 9+ hours a day on my A70 but the entire time I can see the pwm, etc. which is present on the Note. What this means for me is that it's functional but if I had a preference I would prefer DC dimming. I still have my concerns about subtle halos around text etc which is not present on my non-pentile older lcd displays, etc.

So I am using a device which I will keep until the next one but it isn't perfect and I don't think perfect exists anymore for anyone.

As of late and maybe this is something to do with oled but I have started noticing the "light" when watching video is harder and whiter. Almost like when you see soap opera on tv. It's lit harshly. Sort of like that. I prefer softer lighting. Maybe it is how it is being driven. Afaik nobody here has a DC-dimming oled unit.

Some do, older Galaxy S II (not my German device though), a certain LG phone (Flex?), @degen and me have the OP3 which has no PWM above a certain brightness level. There are other OLED phones that turn off PWM this way. I get persisting eye strain after just a few seconds when I turn on PWM. This is the same as using an advertised "DC dimming" device as far as I can tell, because the oscilloscope graphs look the same. No flat line but a small 60 Hz wave (which probably is due to OLED refreshing the pixels line by line in black lines from left to right as seen in another thread).

Edit: I'd try different video player apps to see if there's a difference.

degen I’m still with IP XS, best phone whole day driver since LG G2. Now it’s cheaper so if your’e good with fliping you can try it.
